WPT GTO Trainer Hands of the Week: UTG+1 Open Vs Button Call

Today you’ll be playing as the early position raiser in a tournament against a tough opponent that called you on the Button. Starting hand ranges for both players are narrower than would otherwise be the case in a single raised pot due to your early position at the table.

You will be using a mixed strategy of sometimes c-betting and sometimes checking with many hands in your range on the flop. The size of your c-bet will depend on the texture of the board and its interaction with your respective ranges.

Turn second bullets should be a regular part of your strategy both when you have a made hand and when the turn cards favors your range but doesn’t connect with your hand. Your turn bets will be balanced between made hands and semi-bluffs and bluffs in this way.

When the river card increases board coordination and favors Villain’s flop and turn calling range, you should generally check. If Villain makes a large bet (often all-in at this stack depth), you should often decide between calling and folding by using the concept of blockers. When you hold the key cards that Villain might bluff with, you make it harder for them to be bluffing this time. When you don’t hold those cards, you make it easier for them to be bluffing.

When you hold overpairs to the board, you should often continue aggressively at every opportunity against a single opponent. These hands have a lot of equity against Villain’s range and are also somewhat vulnerable to overcards. These facts incentivize you to play overpairs aggressively so as to deny your opponent equity.
