WPT GTO Trainer Hands of the Week: MP2 Open vs Big Blind 4x 3-Bet
Today you’ll be playing a tough spot in a Tournament where you open-raise to 2.5 BBs in Middle Position, the Big Blind reraises you to 10 BBs and you call.
The first thing to note about this spot is the very low Stack to Pot Ratio (SPR). There are 21.5 BBs already in the pot and only 40 BBs left to play in stacks, for an SPR of less than 2 to 1. This low SPR has dramatic effects on correct strategy.
First, the low Stack to Pot Ratio will incentivize us to protect vulnerable but high equity top pair hands with a raise on the flop. We can simply raise now and get it in with hands that we shouldn’t if we were deeper stacked.
The shallowness of this spot also reduces the value of backdoor draws. Hands like Ace high with a backdoor draw often continue versus a c-bet in deeper spots where they have more implied odds (and are a greater threat). In this spot stacks are very shallow so we should often simply fold them.
We also will regularly raise our strong made hands all-in on the turn both for value and for protection in this scenario.
Pay careful attention to Villain bet sizing on the flop. We can continue with very marginal hands against ¼ pot continuation bets, and should often fold to the larger c-bet sizing.
We will also sometimes get to the river with tiny stacks relative to the pot, sometimes as small as 1/3 or even 1/4 of the pot left to play in stacks. In these cases we should not be afraid to value bet with hands like 2nd pair that might happily check-back if we were deeper. With so little left behind, both our value betting range and Villain’s calling range should be wider.
