Season Six of the Australia New Zealand Poker Tour has kicked off in style at the SKYCITY Auckland Casino as Day 1a of the ANZPT Auckland Main Event has come to a close!
The day started with 44 entrants and when all was said and done, 22 players had bagged up some chips. Leading the way is Eric Chang with 95,100 in chips.
While it was a small field, plenty of notables were at the felt, including Jesse McKenzie, Raj Ramakrishnan, Kevin Clark and
Australian Poker Hall of Fame member Leo Boxell. Unfortunately none of these three players could survive the day and so will have plenty of spare time to explore New Zealand this week.
Some of those who were more fortunate then the dearly departed included William Han, Dean Blatt and Mike Stecker. None of these players fared as well as Chang, but will have plenty of chips to scare come Saturday’s Day 2.

The tournament clock has been paused and the final three hands of the night are now being dealt. It's looking like Eric Chang will be the chip leader, but we will have to wait and see what happens! Stay tuned for all the end-of-day chip counts and a full wrap of the day's action.

William Han is now one of the chip leaders, courtesy of a very nice pot which he claimed against Ruzman Hussan.
We arrived at the action with a 
board on the felt and with a big pot in the middle. Apparently prior to the river, Han had three-bet from the button after Hussan opened the cut off. Hussan then four bet and Han made the call. Hussan check-called a bet on the flop and both players checked the turn.
Both Han and Hussan checked the river and Han reluctantly showed 
, which was enough to scoop up the pot. Han is now up to around 80,000.

Prominent Kiwi poker player Kevin Clark was down to just 4,800 when he shoved his stack in from under the gun. A flurry of cars went into the muck before the action was on the player in the big blind. A reluctant call was made and it was Clark at-risk holding 
against the 
of his opponent.
Clark was safe on the flop and even managed to hit a pair of kings. The turn would mean Clark was still safe, with his opponent only picking up a gut-shot straight draw.
Then a completed the board on the river, giving the player a straight as Clark humbly made his way to the rail.

After losing some early chips, Raj Ramakrishnan has been, in his words, “grinding” throughout the day today - that’s not a style of play that he enjoys.
Ramakrishnan told us that earlier on today he survived a flush over flush situation which dented his stack, but didn’t end his tournament. However he was unable to survive a second cooler hand which saw him run a flush into an opponent’s full house to send him to an early exit.
