Day 2 Completed

Alex Lee(ds) final 37 at ANZPT Sydney

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Chip leader, Alex Lee
Chip leader, Alex Lee

After dozens of eliminations, a lengthy bubble and ultimately eight 60-minute levels of play, the 167 returning players on Day 2 have been whittled down to just 37.

Leading the way with 755,000 in chips is Alex Lee from Canberra. Lee had a massive level of the night, leaving most of his opponents behind. Some of those who also have big stacks include Murray Roach (692,000) and Rory Young (606,000), while Jazz Mathers (458,000), Adrian Attenborough (384,000) and Daniel Neilson (346,000) also finished Day 2 with commendable stacks. You can check out the full end-of-day chip counts and the Day 3 seating draw in the live reporting blog below.

While Lee and the 36 other returning players are all fortunate enough to still be in contention for the $225,300 top prize, there were many who weren’t even fortunate enough to make it into the money at all. This includes players such as Dylan Honeyman, Billy Argyros, Stevan Chew, David Gorr, Jesse McKenzie, Jake Balsiger, former ANZPT Sydney champion Michael Kanaan and PokerStars Team Online Roy Bhasin.

These players would have been disappointed to not make the money, but arguably not as disappointed as the bubble boy. Hand-for-hand play lasted one hour and in the end it was Ben Williams who finished in a meaningless 55th place.

Following Williams’ elimination, Emanuel “Curly” Seal was the first player to finish in the money and from there 18 other players hit the rail with money for their time, details of which can be found on the ANZPT Sydney payouts page.

All the 37 remaining players have currently locked up $4,100 but will of course be looking to secure a spot on the final table. To make it through to the final nine, the players will have to return from 2:00 p.m. tomorrow and survive another action-packed day. We will once again be on deck at The Star providing all the live updates, so be sure to return to find out who makes the ANZPT Sydney final table!

Last Three Hands

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

The tournament clock has been paused and the final three hands are being dealt.

Stay tuned for any late action, to find out who makes Day 3 and who has all the chips.

Three More Down as Alex Crushes

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

Three more players have been eliminated, while Alex Lee is looking more and more likely to finish as the end-of-day leader.

Firstly we had Matthew Burke eliminated in 40th place and Luke Brabin in 39th. Then Karl Spiegel would go home in 38th. Most of Spiegel's chips went to Lee in a massive pot which saw Lee holding {k-Spades}{10-Hearts} on a {5-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}{j-Spades}{a-Diamonds} board. We didn't see what Spiegel had, but it's safe to say it wasn't anywhere near as strong as Lee's Broadway straight. Speigel would go on to lose the rest of his chips a couple of hands later.

Lee is up to a monster 775,000 in chips.

Attenborough Chipping Back Up

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

Adrian Attenborough was one of the short stacks during hand-for-hand play but has now managed to run his stack up to around 250,000. Attenborough took a nice pot off Oliver Gill on a {7-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} board. Gill had opened under the gun and Attenborough flatted from the button. On the flop, Gill check-called a bet, while he led for 20,000 on the turn. On the river, Attenborough bet 38,000 when Gill checked. Gill tank folded.

"Thin-value betting slightly better than my hand," Gill said as Attenborough scooped the chips.

Classic Mathers Call

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

Jazz Mathers was notorious for making a big call with ace-high on Day 1a and has now made another solid call to continue adding chips to his big stack.

We picked up the action on the river of a {q-Clubs}{6-Spades}{6-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} river, with around 80,000 already in the pot and with Jie Gao, Mathers and Anthony Aston involved in the pot. Gao was first to act and led for 30,000. Aston folded and Mathers made an instant call and tabled just {3-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}.

Gao sheepishly showed {k-Clubs}{j-Clubs} and the pot went to Mathers.

Mathers is up to just under 500,0000.
