Day 1a Completed

First Day 1 of ANZPT Sydney All Over

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Chip leader, Jazz Mathers
Chip leader, Jazz Mathers

Eight 60-minute levels and more than 130 eliminations later and the opening Day 1 flight of the ANZPT Sydney Main Event is all over as the clock ticks past 3:00 a.m.

The starting field of 211 players was whittled down to exactly 73 and leading the way with a stack of 198,400 is Jazz Mathers. Some of others to end Day 1 with a big chip stackinclude Danny Zhong, Alex Lee, Anthony Aston, Jordan Westmorland and former ANZPT Sydney champion Michael Kanaan.

Plenty of notable players will join these chip leaders at the felt on Day 2, though with varying stack sizes. This includes players like Brett Chalhoub, Mile Krsatonski, Emanuel Seal, Dylan Honeyman and Australian Poker Hall of Fame members Billy Argyros and Mel Judah. Be sure to check out the full end-of-day chip counts in the live reporting blog below.

Full Tilt ANZPT Ambassador Tom Grigg, Akira Ohyama, Brad Bower, WSOP bracelet winner Andrew Hinrichsen, former APPT Sydney champion Aaron Benton and dual APPT / ANZPT champion Grant Levy just a few of those to be eliminated throughout the day.

We will be back in the beautiful poker room here at The Star from 12:30 p.m. tomorrow, once again bringing all the ANZPT Sydney live updates. It’s the second and final Day 1 flight and everyone is expecting a field large enough to surpass last year’s 460-strong field and maybe even large enough to move past 500 total players and become the largest ANZPT in history.

More Late Chips for Mathers

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Jazz Mathers has eliminated a short-stacked opponent on one of the last hands to end the day on a high note. It was Mathers’ {K-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} up against {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades} with Mathers finding a couple of kings on the board of {K-Spades}{8-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}.

Mathers is now up to around 190,000 and likely to end the day as our chip leader.

Handy Late Double for Allan

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Dave Allan has landed a handy double up in the dying moments of the day. He opened with a raise to 2,000 from under the gun and picked up three other callers to see a flop of {K-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}. Action checked to Allan who bet 3,500 and play folded to Danny Zhong on the button who was the lone caller.

The turn brought the {J-Hearts} and Allan tossed out another 4,500 and Zhong called with the {6-Spades} completing the board on the river. Allan checked and Zhong bet 20,000, which was just enough to put Allan to a decision for his tournament life.

Allan cringed before committing his chips with {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades} which proved a good call against Zhong’s {A-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} for ace-high. That blow will likely cost Zhong the end-of-day chip lead as Allan doubles to around 65,000 chips.

The tournament clock has been paused and the final three hands are being dealt at each table.

Be sure to stay tuned for any late action and to see who ends up with the chip lead, along with all the end-of-day counts.

Mile Coolers Big Pot

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Western Australian Mile Krstanoski has just picked up a very nice pot during this last level of the night. Krstanoski was up against one opponent when the chips went in on a {a-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{j-Clubs} flop, with a handy pot already in the middle.
Krstanoski was all in for 22,075 and it was a cooler as Krstanoski held {k-Spades}{q-Clubs} for Broadway, while his opponent had {j-Spades}{j-Hearts} for a set of jacks.

The {5-Spades} turn and the {2-Clubs} river meant Krstanoski was up to around 70,000 in chips.

Swingy Leading for Lee, Swingy Losing for Allan

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Alex Lee has been rumbling in a whole heap of pots on Day 1a of the ANZPT Sydney Main Event.

He was up to 100,000 halfway through the day, fell to under 60,000 and then moved back up to 75,000. Now he has runaway with the chip lead as we head into the clutch stages of the night, currently sitting with 140,000 in chips.

Let's see if he can hold onto them.

On the other end of the spectrum, David Allan was first up towards 100,000 early in the day, but now has just 15,000.

Let's see if Allan can win some back.
