Pickering Dented by Fraser

Jamie Pickering is said to do his best work after midnight. It seems to be the case as his day continues to plummet.

In a recent hand Pickering moved all in over the top of the opening limp from Michael Fraser, but Fraser snap-called with {K-Hearts}{K-Spades} as Pickering would need some help with {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}.

The board ran out {8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{2-Hearts}{4-Spades} and Fraser doubled up to 188,000, with Pickering falling to the short stack with only 63,000.

Jason Pritchard Eliminated in 23rd Place (AU$15,400)

Jason Pritchard - 23rd Place
Jason Pritchard - 23rd Place
Brendan Edmonds raised to 26,000 and Ray Lapitan made the call before Jason Pritchard put in the squeeze and moved all in for 108,000 in total from the small blind. Edmonds made the call and Lapitan stepped aside.

Pritchard: {7-Diamonds}{7-Clubs}
Edmonds: {K-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}

The flop was {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} to give Edmonds additional straight outs and the {8-Clubs} on the turn gave him additional flush outs also. The river was the {2-Clubs} and Pritchard cried "Yes!" not realizing that Edmonds had made his flush to win the pot. When he learned the bad news, Pritchard was sent to the rail in 23rd place as Edmonds climbs up to 380,000.

Bassam Habib Eliminated in 24th Place (AU$15,400)

Bassam Habib - 24th Place
Bassam Habib - 24th Place
In a three-way pot with Eric Assadourian and Antonio Fazzolari, Bassam Habib has taken the worst of it. Habib limped in preflop, then called Assadourian's raise to 35,000 after Fazzolari also called. Action checked to Habib on the {2-Hearts} {7-Diamonds} {J-Hearts} flop, who shoved for 140,000. That folded Assadourian, but Fazzolari called.

Habib: {A-Spades} {2-Spades}
Fazzolari: {J-Diamonds} {9-Hearts}

Habib had lowly bottom pair against Fazzolari's top pair. The turn {9-Clubs} gave Fazzolari two pair, which held up on the {Q-Clubs} river. Habib is out in 24th place.

"Punty" Overcomes Domination to Double Up

Scott "Punty" Smith
Scott "Punty" Smith
Team Scott Smith fans, brace yourself. Your man opened a pot from late position to 25,000. Action passed to Marlon Goonawardana in the big blind, who re-popped it to 100,000. Smith moved all in for a total of 200,000 and was snap-called.

Smith: {A-Spades} {10-Diamonds}
Goonawardana: {A-Clubs} {K-Clubs}

Smith was a 3-to-1 underdog, but turned the tables on Goonawardana by hitting the {8-Spades} {10-Clubs} {8-Diamonds} flop. The turn {9-Clubs} gave Smith a bit of a sweat; he needed to dodge all the kings and all the clubs on the river. He did; the river was the {5-Hearts}.

Smith is up to 530,000 in chips.

Gray Finds Ace From Space to Stay Alive

Jason Gray
Jason Gray
Jason Gray opened with a raise from early position to 26,000 before Jamie Pickering popped it up to 76,000 from the big blind. Gray then moved all in for 297,000 in total and Pickering quipped, "I'm not good enough to lay this down," before making the call.

Gray: {A-Spades}{K-Clubs}
Pickering: {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}

The board fell {4-Spades}{Q-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{A-Hearts} and Gray spiked an ace from space on the river to survive and double through! Gray is up to over 600,000 with Pickering now down to 175,000.

Australians Dominating

With 24 players remaining it's worth noting that 21 of those players are local Australians. The are joined by one player from Poland, one Canadian and one Kiwi from New Zealand.

Also three of the remaining Australians are in contention for the PokerNetwork.com Australasian Player of the Year award. Jamie Pickering, Brendan Edmonds and Marlon Goonawardana are all currently ranked in the top ten, and a victory here will see them claim the prestigious 2008 PAR title.

Kowalski Continues to Accumulate

Daniel Kowalski raised to 32,000 and Phil Willcocks made the call on the button. The blinds folded and the two took a heads-up flop of {7-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{2-Hearts}.

Kowalski checked to Willcocks, who fired 20,000. Kowalski made the call. The turn was the {10-Diamonds} and both players checked. The river was the {A-Clubs} and Kowalski fired out 25,000. Willcocks folded and Kowalski raked in another pot to swell his stack to over 750,000 chips.

Kassis Doubles in Huge Pot

A huge pot has gone down between George Kassis and Antonio Fazzolari, probably the biggest pot of the tournament so far. Kassis had raised preflop and was called by Fazzolari from the button. Kassis checked a flop of {5-Clubs} {Q-Spades} {9-Clubs} to Fazzolari, then called a bet. On the turn {A-Spades}, Kassis led out. Fazzolari raised him, but couldn't shake him as Kassis called. Kassis then moved all in for his last 115,000 on the river {3-Clubs}. Fazzolari called with {9-Spades} {9-Diamonds} for a set of nines, but Kassis had rivered the nut flush with {A-Clubs} {2-Clubs}! At the end of the day, it was a 650,000-chip pot to Kassis.
