Day 1 Over; Mitch Carle Soars To Lead

Level 7 : 400/800, 75 ante
Chip Leader, Mitch Carle
Chip Leader, Mitch Carle

Day 1 of the first leg on the fifth season of the PokerStars.net Asia-Pacific Poker Tour has come and gone, with Melbourne, Australia successfully playing host to an elite field of players from all around the world.

It was a new stop for the APPT and a field of 260 players took to the felt in the Crown Poker Room, all vying for the chance to take home a title and the $330,000 to go along with it.

The day started with APPT commissioner Danny McDonough introducing 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Chris Moneymaker, who kicked off the proceedings to an excited room full of players and a big rail of spectators.

Moneymaker managed to make it through the day with only a small amount over what he started the day with, but it would be a better effort than fellow World Series of Poker Main Event champ Joe Hachem who ran his short stack into the {a-}{k-} of Liam Moffett holding {a-}{q-}.

The player with all the chips at the end of the day was none other than Aussie local Mitch Carle who will return with a monster 187,900-chip stack. Some of the players hot on Carle’s tail include Kyle Cheong (126,825), David Allan (123,700), Phil Wilcocks (110,100), James Obst (108,800) and David Steicke (107,50)

Team PokerStars Pro Bryan Huang will be among the 146 players who will return for play tomorrow, Huang returning with a healthy 66,875. Also prominent among those returning include Jonathan Karamalikis (98,525), Van Marcus (91,500), Andrew Hinrichsen (40,625), Jesse McKenzie (47,325) and Tony Hachem (35,000).

Don’t forget to join the PokerNews Live Reporting Team tomorrow at 12:30 PM local time, as the APPT Melbourne Main Event continues with day two action!

Three More Will Do

Level 7 : 400/800, 75 ante

With only five minutes left on Day 1 of the APPT here in Melbourne, the tournament director has paused the clock and announced that there will be three more hands for the night.

On For Young And Old

Level 7 : 400/800, 75 ante

Brendon Rubie couldn't quite make it through the day, falling to the rail with just 15 minutes left in the last level.

With Peter Aristidou raising it to 2,400 Rubie would move all in from his direct left. The action folded back around to Aristidou who asked the dealer to take out the 2,400. With only a few moments thought, Arisitdou made the call for around 15,000 more and the players turned their hands over.

Aristidou: {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}
Rubie: {5-Spades}{6-Spades}

Board: {k-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{j-Clubs}

Aristidou took down the pot and sent Rubie to the rail. Aristidou is now back over 40,000.

Hachem Takes Hit

Level 7 : 400/800, 75 ante

We came to Tony Hachem's table with a board showing {7-Clubs}{9-Spades}{2-Clubs}{5-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and a check to one opponent from Hachem.

The player bet 10,000 and sent Hachem into the tank.

Hachem eventually made the call, but cringed as his opponent tabled {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for a flopped two pair.

Carle Crushing

One player will be licking his wounds after running a bluff into the pocket aces of Mitch Carle, who now moves to a dominating chip lead.

The player in question raised preflop from early position and then called Carle's three-bet before seeing the flop fall {5-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}.

The player then check-raised all in for around 11,000 which Carle quickly called.

The {j-Spades}{q-Spades} of Carle's opponent would not get any help, as Carle took his {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts} all the way to the bank to see his stack increase yet again.

Neilson Picked Off

Level 7 : 400/800, 75 ante

We arrived at the table with a board showing {q-Clubs}{3-Spades}{2-Hearts}{9-Spades}{3-Clubs} and with Daniel Neilson in the hand against one opponent.

Neilson threw in a 12,575, which prompted a bit of a tank from his opponent. Eventually the player would make the call, which Neilson couldn't have liked as he sent his cards into the muck without showing.

The winner of the hand then placed his cards in the muck faced down and told Neilson he had a queen.

With that hand Neilson moves to around 55,000.
