Day 2 Completed
After eight hours of play, Day 2 of the Melbourne APPT Main Event has come to a close. When all was said and done, there were 37 players who survived the day who will return tomorrow, with 28 of those lucky enough to not go home empty-handed.
Towering over all the competition at the top of the leader board and primed to make a run at the victory is New Zealander Phillip Willcocks, who will return tomorrow with a monster 770,400-chip stack.
While there is no player close to the stack of Willcocks, there are still quite a few prominent players who will return for Day 3 action with plenty of chips to play with. These include the young James Obst (452,900), Koray Turker (424,400) and the last remaining female in the field, Norah Greer (382,000).
Also bagging an impressive stack was Australia's PokerStars Team Online Pro Keiran Harris, with Harris managing to finish the day with 389,000.
Some other names making it to Day 3 including Antonis Kambouroglou (279,200), Reza Vakili (231100), Michael Guzzardi (230,100), Leo Boxell (168,400), Tony Hachem (161,400), Ricky Kroesen (157,400) and Van Marcus (123,900).

The tournament director has just paused the clock and announced that there will only be three more hands of play.
With quite a few short stacks around, it will be interesting to see if they fold their way to Day 3 or take a shot at chipping up before they bag and tag!
Koray Turker raised to 6,700 from middle position and Jackson Zheng made the call from late position, before the action came to Ricky Kroesen in the cutoff position. Kroesen saw this as his chance to move all in and did exactly that, for a total of 78,800. Turker got out of the way and Zheng decided to make the call.
Zheng:
Kroesen:
The board ran out . The queen on the flop and the eventual full house was good enough to give Kroesen the double up and deliver a hit to Zheng's stack.
Player | Chips | Progress |
---|---|---|
Jackson Zheng | 255,000 | -195,000 |
Ricky Kroesen | 170,000 | 83,000 |
Michael Guzzardi raised to 6,000 from under the gun and got the call from Andrew Scott in the big blind.
The flop turned over and Scott led for 6,000. Guzzardi then raised to 18,000. Scott decided to pop it to 36,000 and sent Guzzardi into the tank. After some thought Guzzardi moved all in for 79,100 and sent Scott into the same tank Guzzardi just got out of. Scott decided to make the call, Guzzardi having him covered.
Scott:
Guzzardi:
Guzzardi's overpair was in front of the top pair of Scott and when the turn and river bricked, it was all over for Scott, as Guzzardi takes the handy double up late into Day 2.
Player | Chips | Progress |
---|---|---|
Michael Guzzardi | 245,000 | 205,000 |
Andrew Scott | Busted |
Another table has just been broken and the players have now been spread among just five tables of eight with only half an hour remaining on Day 2.
It hasn't been a fun last level for Jonathan Karamalikis, with his tournament life coming to an end after this hand played out.
Action was folded to Karamalikis in the cutoff and he made it 15,000 to go, which happened to be a big chunk of his remaining stack. Julius Colman then put in a large stack of 5,000-denomination chips from the small blind and when Karamalikis made the call, the players would turn their hands over.
Karamalikis:
Colman:
The board would run out and the flopped pair of queens sent Karamalikis to the rail.
Karamalikis, who took down the APPT Sydney Main Event in 2010, won't be seeing the same sort of success at the Melbourne APPT in 2011.
Jonathan Karamalikis raised to 7,500 from middle position and the action was folded around to Tony Hachem on the button. Hachem quickly announced he was all in and the action was sent back around to Karamalikis who made the call.
Hachem:
Karamalikis:
Hachem would need some help or he would be going home.
Board:
A queen on the flop would save Hachem and put a dent in the stack of Karamalikis.
Player | Chips | Progress |

Tony Hachem | 70,000 | -15,000 |
Jonathan Karamalikis | 51,000 | -124,000 |
