Ashley Mason Leads Final Nine of APPT Melbourne Main Event

Level 22 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Ashley Mason will lead the final nine
Ashley Mason will lead the final nine

An exciting day of poker has come to an end leaving us with nine players securing a seat at this year’s APPT Melbourne Main Event final table. The chip leader heading into tomorrow’s play is Ashley Mason, who will have tough competition from experienced players like Billy “The Croc” Argyros, Joe Cabret and [Removed:17].

The day started with 42 hopefuls, but within the hour, six had left the room. We were on the money bubble, and after several players had committed their stacks and survived, it would be Kwong Phung who’d be given the unwanted title of money-bubble. Phung was short-stacked and moved all in for his last 40,500 holding {a-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}. Phi Luu made the call with {7-Diamonds}{7-Spades} and held as the board ran out queen-high to leave us with 36 players earning themselves a guaranteed $5,000 for their efforts.

Jonathan Karamalikis was the first player to reach a million in chips after taking out Joel Feldman with his pocket aces versus pocket jacks. The next big milestone occurred when Pravin Harji was eliminated in 31st place. He was unable to hold with his pocket fours against Jason Gray’s {k-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. His exit from the tournament guaranteed Iori Yogo the title of 2013 ANZ Player of the Year.

The next few hours saw many fall, before Joe Cabret looked like the next to join the casualties with 18 remaining. He was involved in a big hand against Matthew Rolfe where his {9-Hearts}{9-Clubs} was out-flopped by {a-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} on a {4-Spades}{3-Clubs}{5-Diamonds} board. He was left with only a 5,000-chip and was in for less than a small blind the very next hand. Three double-ups later and Cabret was nursing a 140,000 stack. Fast forward an hour, and the 2013 Aussie Millions Main Event runner-up had taken the chip lead sitting behind 1.3 million chips with 16 to go.

With two tables left we lost some well-known players including Martin Kozlov (16th), Billy Jordanou (15th), Ivan Zalac (14th), and Australian Poker Hall of Famer Jason Gray {11th). The eventual final table bubble was none other than online superstar Jonathan Karamalikis. In the final hand of the night he moved all in from the big blind with pocket fives after two players limped into the pot. Bowdy Tolhopf decided to make the call with {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} and eventually took down the hand when he rivered a ten to scoop the almost-million chip pot.

This is how the final nine are looking heading into the final day of play.

Jonathan Karamalikis Eliminated in 10th Place ($11,680) - Final Table Awaits

Level 22 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

The final hand of the night saw [Removed:17] limp in from under the gun. Bowdy Tolhopf made the call from the small blind before Jonathan Karamalikis moved all in for 483,000. Yan toyed with the idea of calling before opting to fold. Tolhopf then snap-called the bet as both players tabled their cards.

Tolhopf: {a-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Karamalikis: {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}

The flop came down {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} which gave Tolhopf a flush draw. The {8-Hearts} then increased the amount of outs Tolhopf had as Karamalikis was slowly getting out of his chair. In the end the {10-Hearts} completed the board, giving Tolhopf the better pair, sending Karamalikis to the rail one short of the final table.

Be sure to stay tuned as we bring you the updated final table chip counts as well as end of day wrap.

Busted

Back to Bust One

Level 22 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

The players are back from their break. Just one more player needs to bust before we are at the final table.

There are 30 minutes remaining in the current level.

Break It Up

Level 22 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

The players have been sent on what is very likely their last 10-minute break of the day.

Massive Pot to Yan

Level 22 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

Bowdy Tolhopf started the action by opening the cut-off to 55,000. [Removed:17] three bet to 137,000 from the button and Tolhopf made the call.

On the {a-Diamonds}{2-Spades}{4-Hearts} flop, Tolhopf led for 55,000 and Yan raised to 140,000. Tolhopf made the call and a {5-Spades} hit the turn. This time Tolhopf led for 250,000 and after some thought, Yan made the call.

On the {8-Spades} river, both players checked and Yan tabled {a-Spades}{j-Diamonds}. That was strong to send Tolhopf's cards into the muck and for Yan to scoop the very nice pot.

Miracle Mathers

Level 22 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

Jazz Mathers has been the short stack for a few orbits now and recently it looked like he would be our final table bubble boy. Mathers was all in for 155,000 holding {q-Hearts}{j-Hearts} and it was looking bleak against Robert Damelian's {a-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}. Then the {7-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} board was spread on the felt and Mathers had doubled up.

Double Dong

Level 22 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

Jonathan "MONSTER DONG" Karamalikis was recently all in from the small blind holding {10-Hearts}{7-Hearts} against the {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs} of Bowdy Tolhopf, in the big blind.

Up to the turn, the {5-Spades}{j-Spades}{j-Hearts}{8-Spades} board was a safe one, but the {7-Spades} river meant that Karamalikis had found what he needed to double up.

Despite losing this hand, Tolhopf is still one of the chip leaders.

Tolhopf Applying the Pressure

Level 22 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante

The hand started with Bowdy Tolhopf limping in from the cut off and finding a call from Jonathan Karamalikis on the button. [Removed:17] was in the small blind, and quickly raised it up to 112,000. The action didn’t stop there, with Tolhopf quickly announcing raise and sliding out 350,000. The bet was too much for Karamalikis who folded, before Yan went into the tank.

Another lengthy tank saw Yan opt to fold his hand, relinquishing the pot to Tolhopf.
