Day 1b Completed

Jia Liang Jumps Into the Lead After Day 1b of the APPT9 Macau Main Event

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Day 1b and Overall Chip Leader Jia Liang
Day 1b and Overall Chip Leader Jia Liang

As expected, the second starting day of the Season 9 Asia Pacific Poker Tour Macau HK$25,000 Main Event at PokerStars LIVE Macau at City of Dreams attracted a bigger field than Day 1a, but last year's record attendance was missed by just one participant. Along with the 207 players from Day 1a, the 286 entries of Day 1b created an overall field of 493 entrants in total.

Out of those, the top 59 spots will get paid at least HK$43,600 whereas the winner can look forward to a shiny silver PokerStars trophy and a first-place payout of HK$2,525,000. In the best position to make a run at the top prize is Jia Liang, who soared into the lead in the last level of the night. Liang knocked out two opponents, including Victor Chong in the last five hands, and bagged up impressive 198,200 chips.

Notables that didn't make it through Day 1b included the entire HK$50,000 Freezeout top four in Sheng Sun, Jack Hu, 2014 World Series of Poker Asia Pacific Main Event champion Scott Davies and Kim Wittendorff. Likewise, poker legend Johnny Chan, who recently won the Poker King Club Grand Opening Charity Event, found himself on the rail.

Celina Lin suffered a shocking exit after less than half an hour, and her fellow PokerStars Team Pros Brian Huang and Vivian Im soon joined her on the rail. Team Online member Randy "nanonoko" Lew also busted in cruel fashion, while Steve O'Dwyer had a tough day and eventually claimed 50,900 chips upon bagging and tagging.

Other Day 1b big stacks include Ke Jing Li (160,800), Sihai Jiang (155,000), Ronald Chun Long Yu (150,200), Fan Zhao (146,000), Wenxiong Luo (132,000) and Geng Liu (110,000). After eight 60-minute levels, just 112 players advanced, which means along with the Day 1a survivors, 188 players will return to the tables at 14:00 local time on Friday.

Another eight levels will be played, and the money should is expected to burst around end of Day 2. The action will recommence in Level 13 with the blinds at 600/1,200/200, and the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be back to provide all key moments of another exiting day from the felt.

While you wait, check out this interview with Winfred Yu, President of the Poker King Club, about moving his poker room to The Venetian:

Liang Busts Chong and Takes Big Lead

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Joining the action on the turn of a {2-Spades}{J-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{Q-Spades} turn, Victor Chong had led for 8,000 from the cutoff. Big stack Jia Liang moved his massive stack of T-5,000 chips forward to push Chong all in and the latter had around 17,000 behind.

He eventually called off with the {4-Spades}{5-Spades} for a pair and a flush draw while Liang had the open-ended straight draw with {K-Hearts}{10-Hearts}. The {10-Clubs} river gave Liang the better hand and he celebrated before stoically stacking the chips and getting right back to his usual poker face.

Quads Help a Lot

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

After a flop of {8-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{5-Clubs}, Fabio Fumagalli led out of the big blind and then shoved when his opponent on the cutoff clicked it up to 8,000. It was another 15,700 to call on top of the raise and that came very reluctantly. In fact, the time was called on the opponent and he tossed in the chips with 10 seconds left to flip over {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}.

Fumagalli had {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} for a flopped full house and definitely locked up the double with the {5-Diamonds} on the turn. A meaningless {A-Spades} river completed the board and the Swiss is now up to what looks like 50k.

Liang Makes A Charge For The Lead

Level 8 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Four players limped into the pot including Jia Liang in the cut off. The flop came down {8-Spades}{3-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} and both blinds checked. The player under the gun bet out 2,500 which only interested Liang to his left.

After the {6-Diamonds} fell on the turn, the player under the gun threw out another 8,000 which was quickly called before the {a-Spades} completed the board.

Without hesitation, the aggressor moved all in for 29,000. Liang asked for a count and waited as the dealer cut out the chips and gave him and exact count. Once he was told, Liang made the call, and watched as his opponent rolled over his {2-Diamonds}{2-Hearts} for the smallest possible pair.

Liang then tabled his {10-Hearts}{9-Spades} for a pair of tens and the winning hand. He now moves up to 140,000 which is one of the biggest stacks in the room.
