Event #13: Australia Heads-Up Championship

Day 1 Completed

First Heat Down to Smith and Woods

Sixteen players began this afternoon in the first of two $10,500 Heads-Up Championship heats. It might be Australia Day, but it was two Americans who survived three best-of-three rounds to move on to Friday's semi-finals. Dan "King Dan" Smith battled Daniel Nielson, Darren Woods, Billy Jordanou, and a raging cold to guarantee himself $40,000 and a shot at $150,000. Barry Woods, last year's runner-up, worked his way through Scott Palmer, Nikolay Evdakov, and Mark Everett to earn a second consecutive semi-finals spot. Smith and Woods will play each other on Friday. Then one of them will move on to the finals.

Others who played today include Full Tilt Red Pro Annette Obrestad, Daniel Alaei, and Dan "jungleman12" Cates. Another raft of 16 players will play down to two tomorrow beginning at 2:00 pm local time.

Woods Ousts Everett

It took only a few hands into the third and final match to determine who would be the winner between Barry Woods and Mark Everett and it happened when this hand played out.

It was a limped pot that saw the {2-Spades}{8-Clubs}{k-Spades} fall out on the flop and Woods would check-call a bet from Everett before watching the {j-Spades} roll off on the turn. Again Woods would check call as the {a-Clubs} would fall on the river.

This time Woods would lead for 1,675 before Everett would shove allin over the top of him.

"I guess if you got it you got it," said Woods as he called and turned over {4-Spades}{5-Spades} for a turned flush.

Everett would muck his hand as he strolled out of the tournament area as the last man eliminated for day one of the Australian Heads-Up Championship

Everett Ties It Up

Barry Woods will have to play atleast one more match after first being crippled running {k-Diamonds}{k-Spades} into Mark Everett's {5-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} on a {4-Clubs}{5-Spades}{9-Clubs}{6-Spades}{a-Spades} board and then finding himself all-in for his last few big blinds holding {10-Clubs}{3-Spades} against {7-Spades}{8-Clubs}. The board in question would run out {4-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}, the river card securing the game for Everett.

With Dan Smith recently taking out Billy Jordanou there is one remaining game this evening, with Woods and Everett squaring off on the third and final game to determine who will win the match and progress through. Let's do this.

King Dan Moves on to Friday's Semi-Final

Dan Smith wasn't feeling well and decided last night to unregister in the morning. But he woke up too late and was already paired with his first draw when he got the poker room. Good thing.

There was 1,400 in the middle preflop on the final hand. On the {7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}, Dan Smith bet 850, and Billy Jordanou raised to 2,100. Then Smith moved all in for close to 10,000, and Jordanou called all in. Smith held {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}, but his overpair had been outflopped by Jordanou's {7-Clubs}{3-Clubs}.

Jordanou and his rail called for him to hold. They liked the {8-Diamonds} turn and started celebrating on the {5-Clubs} river. The dealer turned over Smith's cards, and then everyone realized that the paired board on the river meant Smith's queens up were good. Jordanou shoved his chips at Smith and left unhappily with his entourage.

Dan Smith is guaranteed $40,000 and will back on Friday to play in the semi-finals.

Woods Up One

Barry Woods bet 600 when the flop came {k-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}. Mark Everett bumped it up to 2,500, and Barry shoved over the bet. Everett snap called with {j-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for a flush draw and gutter. With {10-Clubs}{5-Clubs}, Woods needed to dodge a host of outs. And dodge he did with the {3-Clubs} turn and {a-Spades} river.

They are taking a quick break before starting the second game.

PN Guide to Poker: Don't Try to Bluff a Guy Who Flopped a Boat

Mark Everett checked the {q-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} board to Barry Woods, who bet 700. Then Everett raised to 2,200. Woods thought a minute before calling. As soon as the {6-Spades} river hit, Everett moved all in. A beautiful sight to Woods, who called all in and tabled {q-Spades}{8-Spades} for the flopped full house. Everett could only show for {10-Diamonds}{7-Spades} for a missed flush draw bluff. They are back to even in chips.

Smith Rivers To A Decider

After Billy Jordanou made the flat call from the button, Dan Smith would slide enough 1,000 denomination chips across the table to put Jordanou allin.

Jordanou insta-called and the players would turn their cards over.

Jordanou: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}
Smith: {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

After the board ran out {a-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{7-Spades} with one card to come, it was looking pretty good for Jordanou to double-up and take the chip lead. But the {k-Diamonds} on the river would change all that and send the pot and the victory to Smith.

With the score now tied at 1:1 the players will be commencing the final deciding match, with the winner advancing to the semi-finals and a guaranteed cash prize.

Second Quarter-Final Match Underway

Barry Woods and Mark Everett are sitting down and preparing to play. Everett caught Woods off guard by introducing himself. Both called for cocktail service. Woods got a bottle of water, and Everett ordered two bottles of water and a double espresso to go with the bottle of water and large pink smoothie he already has. Guess he's really, really thirsty.
