Quadzilla Jones

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

A massive hand on Table 40 has resulted in one of the first eliminations of the day.

Several players assisted in retelling how Rhys Jones doubled up through his opponent.

The action started with the player in middle position opening with a raise before the player in the hijack bumped it up. Jones called from the small blind. The original raiser folded.

The flop came down {4-}{4-}{8-} and Jones bet out. His opponent reraised prompting Jones to three-bet. His opponent called.

The turn brought a {j-} and Jones checked. His opponent tossed out 10,000 only to see him come over the top moving all in for his remaining chips. His opponent quickly obliged.

Jones: {8-}{8-}
Opponent: {j-}{j-}.

Jones had flopped a full house but his opponent had made the higher full house on the turn.

The dealer then produced the {8-} on the river to give Jones quad eights and the winning hand to send his opponent to the rail in the opening minutes of play.

Roster Tests Opposition

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Another player who has begun proceedings as he no doubt means to continue is Jeff Rossiter.

We caught the action on the flop in a heads-up pot between Rossiter and a tablemate with over 1,000 already in the middle and the board reading {6-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} just as action is checked over to Rossiter, who is sitting on the button.

Rossiter fired out a bet of 400, which is quickly called by his opponent and it’s off to the turn, which comes down {5-Clubs}.

This brings another check from Rossiter’s opponent and a slightly larger bet of 1,600 from Rossiter, which is again called.

The {j-Hearts} river brings a third check from the player out of position and after thinking things over for a minute Rossiter bombs it for 10,000 into a pot of roughly 6,000.

Coincidently this is the exact amount Rossiter’s opponent has left in front of him and he decides to bow out leaving Rossiter to collect the pot.

Check Raise the River

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Terrence Chan raised his cutoff to 300 and his neighbor Federico Butteroni called. Both blinds came along as well and the four of them saw a flop of {8-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}. The blinds checked and Chan bet 600. Just Butteroni called, the blinds folded.

Chan bet another 1,800 on the {8-Clubs} turn and again Butteroni called.

The {Q-Spades} completed the board and Chan checked. Federico Butteroni bet 2,500 and saw Chan check-raise to 16,500. Butteroni tanked long and hard but eventually folded.

Fish Finds Value

Darryll Fish
Darryll Fish

Darryll Fish is already stacking some newly acquired chips after taking from tablemate Bruno Portaro.

The action went three ways to the flop of {5-Hearts}{k-Spades}{3-Hearts} and it was checked around to the {j-Clubs} turn. Fish then fired for 500, Portaro called in the cutoff and with Will Molson letting it go on the button the dealer revealed the {k-Clubs} river card.

Fish made it 1,500 on the end and Portaro called it off to see Fish’s {q-Spades}{q-Clubs}. That was good enough to take down the pot and Fish added to his stack in the early stages of Day 1b.

Martins Gets Ball Rolling

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Portugal’s Antonio Martins started Day 1B of the Aussie Millions positively. Sitting in the cutoff and following an under the gun limp Martins raised to 300 with both the big blind and under the gun limper making the call.

The big blind checked the {a-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} flop before the under the gun limper fired out a bet of 500 which is called by both Martins and the big blind.

Both the big blind and under the gun player check the {q-Hearts} turn over to Martins, who decided to take control of the hand and led out for 725.

That was enough to get the big blind to bow out but not the under the gun player who opted to call taking the action heads-up to the {5-Hearts} river, which completed a possible back door heart flush.

Both players check and as the last aggressor, Martins showed first, his rivered two pairs with {a-Hearts}{5-Diamonds} good enough to take down his first pot of the day.

Early Birds in the Field

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

A plethora of notable pros have taken their seats early in Day 1b proceedings.

Among them include locals Craig Blight, Michael Egan, Shivan Abdine, Ryan Otto, Alex Lynskey, Angelina Rich, Michael Kanaan and Bruno Portaro.

The internationals are also in force with Ryan D'Angelo, Terrence Chan, 2015 November-Niner Federico Butteroni, Darryll Fish and Mark Radoja also present.

Also hidden amongst the players are Tyron Krost and Jeff Rossiter. Krost won this event back in 2010 when he bested a 746-player field to take home the two million dollar prize pool and be crowned champion. Rossiter has a very impressive resume with results that see him sit 2nd in Australia on the all-time money list. A 3rd place in the 2011 Aussie Million as well as coming 2nd in the 2013 GuongDong Asia Millions his two biggest scores to date netting him almost $4 million in prizemoney.

Day 1b Awaits

Melbourne Skyline
Melbourne Skyline

Welcome to Day 1b of the 2017 Aussie Millions Main Event!

It won’t be long now until the Crown Poker Room is abuzz once again with a new batch of hopefuls trying their luck here on Day 1b. They’ll be chasing Sam Ingham who set the pace yesterday spinning up his 30,000-chip starting stack to a mammoth 160,100 by the conclusion of play.

Ingham shot to the lead in the final level of Day 1a when he flopped a straight against Chance Kornuth’s bottom set. The two of them had all the money in by the turn and with no repeat on the river Ingham sent the notable American pro packing to be awarded a huge pot.

Before that could happen, however, it was Australian cricket legend Shane Warne who kicked off proceedings hours earlier. He and Crown tournament director Joel Williams took to the microphones to welcome our players and with Warne announcing shuffle up and deal the cards were in the air. Warne joined the action himself and while he didn’t have a stellar day on the felt he still managed to qualify for Day 2 – finishing up with 37,600.

Power couple Phil Laak and Jennifer Tilly were also in attendance and while Laak made an early exit, Tilly navigated her way through the seven levels of play to bag up 85,000 when all was said and done.

With late registration open until the end of Level 8 players were able to join the hunt all throughout yesterday. Ultimately it was 212 who took advantage of that, pulling up seats to comfortably eclipse last year’s 180 on Day 1a. Time will tell how many make an appearance here today as Day 1b is set to commence.

For now we wait until 12:30pm local time when we’ll do it all again. Day 1b will see another seven 90-minute levels with 15-minute breaks in between and a 75-minute dinner break following Level 4. Be sure to stay with us at PokerNews for live coverage direct from the tournament floor here in Melbourne!
