The Aussie Millions ANTON Jewellery $50,000 Challenge at Crown Melbourn got off to a late start, but it proved to be an early finish.

That's because the tournament drew just four runners, and the players didn't waste much time before knocking each other out, wrapping things up in less than six hours. In the end, super high roller veteran Sam Greenwood was the last one standing and booked a win after doing a quick deal heads up with Jan Schwippert.

Greenwood pocketed A$116,400 while Schwippert banked A$77,600 for outlasting Alex Foxen and Koji Fujimoto.

The tournament got under way two hours late as players couldn't be lured in when just Greenwood was registered early and in his seat at the scheduled start time of 1:10 p.m. They agreed to reconvene a couple of hours later, but only Foxen and Schwippert ponied up the cash while a number of other players loitered around uncertainly, waiting to see if more runners would appear.

The battle got going, and the players certainly didn't waste much time or play deliberately slowly in an attempt to give others a chance to fire. After a short feeling-out period, the three pros started three-betting and four-betting each other aggressively, but nobody could open up a significant lead.

After the first break, Koji Fujimoto sat in, but that wasn't enough to draw anyone else's interest and populate the table. Four-handed play, along with raised blinds, proved to be a catalyst for action. Pots swelled quickly and Foxen became the first to fall when he took a beat at the hands of Schwippert, kings failing to hold preflop against ace-jack.

Fujimoto found basically no success and followed Foxen out the door minutes later after losing the last of his short stack.

Greenwood and Schwippert each had about double the starting stack and had a choice: lock in the prize pool now and play heads up to finish it or play heads up and allow registration to remain open, with an elimination meaning the tournament would be over and someone would claim the whole prize pool.

They opted for the former and Schwippert raced out to a 3-1 lead early before running fives into sevens and allowing a Greenwood double. It was essentially all Greenwood from there as he hammered Schwippert down to about 10 big blinds before allowing a couple of doubles.

However, the Canadian stopped the bleeding from there and ended the tournament when he check-raised on a bluff and backed into a flush while his opponent backed into a straight after missing his own flopped flush draw.

That put an end to a short $50K Challenge, and things will be focused all on the Main Event here for the next few days.

Jan Schwippert Eliminated in 2nd Place (A$77,600)

Jan Schwippert opened for 2,500 and got action from Sam Greenwood. Greenwood checked the {9-Clubs}{q-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} and Schwippert bet 3,500. Greenwood made it 11,000 and Schwippert called. The turn was a {5-Diamonds} and Greenwood bet 21,000. Schwippert again called. The river: {a-Diamonds}. Greenwood put in 75,000, enough to cover Schwippert's remaining 54,000 or so. The German quickly called with {4-Clubs}{2-Clubs} for a flush draw that became a backdoor straight, but Greenwood had gotten lucky with {j-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} and made a flush himself.

Schwippert Doubles Up Again

Level 4 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Jan Schwippert brought it back to even after making another double-up in quick succession. On a {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{6-Spades} flop, Greenwood checked, Schwippert bet 3,000 and Greenwood called. The turn was the {10-Spades} and Greenwood check-called 9,000 from the German.

The river paired the board with the {6-Clubs}. Greenwood checked, Schwippert announced all in for his remaining 29,500 and Greenwood, after verifying Schwippert indeed had said it, instantly called.

Schwippert tabled {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} for queens full and Greenwood reluctantly mucked {10-Clubs}{2-Clubs} for the rivered flush.

Schwippert Doubles Back on River

Level 4 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Jan Schwippert got hammered down to about 13,000 but fought his way back to 23,000 before he limped the button. Sam Greenwood put in 3,000 and snap-called when Schwippert jammed.

Schwippert: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}
Greenwood: {10-Hearts}{10-Clubs}

The board came {3-Spades}{a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}, putting Greenwood on the precipice of ending things, but the {6-Diamonds} river saved Schwippert, who counted down his stack of 23,100 with a wide smile.

Schwippert in the Danger Zone

Level 4 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Jan Schwippert raised to 2,500 and Sam Greenwood defended. Both players checked the {Q-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} flop. On the {9-Diamonds} turn, Greenwood checked, Schwippert bet 4,000, Greenwood check-raised to 13,000 and Schwippert called.

The river brought the {8-Hearts} and Greenwood slid in 26,000. Schwippert called it off but couldn't defeat Greenwood's {9-Spades}{2-Spades} for two pair. Greenwood now holds more than a 7:1 lead.

Three-Bet Pot Sees Greenwood Go Up 2-1

Level 4 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Sam Greenwood opened on the button for 2,500 and called a three-bet to 10,000 from Jan Schwippert. Schwippert bet 6,500 on the {k-Spades}{a-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} flop and Greenwood peeled. Both checked the {9-Diamonds} and Schwippert checked the {2-Diamonds}. Greenwood verbalized a bet we couldn't here, but he hadn't even dropped a chip in before Schwippert mucked his cards.

Greenwood Doubles into the Lead

Level 4 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

In a flash, the two players were all in. It looked like Greenwood raised on the button and Schwippert put him all in for 53,200. Greenwood called with {7-Spades}{7-Clubs} and had a big edge on the {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} held by Schwippert. The board ran out {q-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{6-Spades}{2-Spades}{9-Clubs} and the players are now all but even.
