2018 Aussie Millions Main Event Breaks All-Time Attendance Record

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

Aussie Millions 2018 A$10,600 Main Event

More people than ever before have travelled to the Crown Casino in Melbourne to contest for Aussie Millions glory. With 374 entries on Day 1c after four levels of play, the total number of entries for the 2018 Aussie Millions Main Event is currently at 782, making it the largest field ever in the tournament's rich 21-year history.

The previous record was set in 2008 when 781 players entered, and where eventual winner Alexander "joiso" Kostritsyn laid the foundation for his later high stakes career.

The total number of players is expected to rise, as players are still able to register up until the end of level 8, which is the first level of Day 2.

Karlic Tries to Bluff Two

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

Gerald Karlic bet 1,800 when the blinds checked to him on a {3-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{7-Hearts} flop and everyone stuck around to see the {a-Spades} turn. That checked through, bringing a {2-Clubs}. Karlic bet 6,200 after his opponents checked, and the small blind tanked awhile then flicked in a call. Matt Berkey mucked in the big.

Karlic tossed {k-Spades}{4-Spades} into the middle and lost a showdown to {j-Clubs}{10-Spades}.

Kings No Good

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

In a blind battle, action was on Shane Vijayaram in the big blind. With the board reading {A-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}, Vijayaram bet 4,900 and his opponent called.

On the {3-Diamonds} river, the small blind opted to lead out for 7,700. Vijayaram grumbled and instantly flung his {K-}{K-} open in the muck. The small blind showed the {A-Hearts} and raked in the pot.

Greenwood Fades a Flush

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

After defending his big blind, Robin Hegele pushed all in for about 5,000 on a {3-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{8-Diamonds} flop and Sam Greenwood thought briefly before calling from the cutoff.

Robin Hegele: {5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}
Greenwood: {6-Hearts}{6-Spades}

The board ran out {8-Hearts} {10-Hearts} and Greenwood's six-high was a winner.

Chong's Cold Welcome; Lewis Jams

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante

Victor Chong had just registered for the event and faced a raise to 1,000 and a call. Chong in the big blind three-bet to 4,500 and the initial raiser folded, the small blind called. On the {K-Spades}{4-Clubs}{3-Spades} flop, the small blind check-called a bet of 4,000 and led the {J-Spades} turn for 11,000. Chong checked his cards twice and let go eventually.

Toby Lewis, usually very calm when playing, had been spotted jumping out of his seat before the dinner break after being bluffed out of a big pot. Just now he faced the very same opponent again and the completed board of {K-Clubs}{6-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{J-Hearts} had created a pot of 22,000 already. Lewis moved all in for 10,950 and his opponent tanked, the clock was called on him and one minute ran down without any decision to kill the cards.

Defending Champion Shurane Vijayaram in the Field

Level 4 : 150/300, 25 ante
Shurane Vijayaram - $10,000 Main Event Aussie Millions Winner 2017
Shurane Vijayaram - $10,000 Main Event Aussie Millions Winner 2017

In the field since Level 1 today is defending champion Shurane "Shane" Vijayaram. Last year he turned a $130 satellite seat into a $1.6m score and is back playing the Aussie Millions Main Event 12 months on.

"It's awesome to be back," said Vijayaram. "Playing at my home casino; it's awesome and there's a great atmosphere. Everoyne is having fun - I mean, everyone likes to have a punt.

"It's just a great festival."

Vijayaram says he's played here a couple of times since his win, but today has been an up and down start.

"I was up a little bit. But then I flopped a king-high flush and my opponent turned a boat. Still in, and it's a long day so there are plenty of hands still to play."

And what advice does he have for anyone playing in their first major tournament, just like he did last year?

"I’d say just play it like every other tournament. Like I said, they're long days so don't get disheartened that you lose or because you're down a little bit. There's a lot of hands still to come!"
