A Surprising Double Up for Mattern

Team PokerStars Pro Arnaud Mattern has been on the short stack, but recently doubled up and was "surprised" to do so, his word.

A player in early position min-raised to 400 and was called by hijack, cutoff, and button seat players. Mattern shipped it in from the big blind for 3,750 and his lone caller was the original min-raiser.

She tabled {A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds} and was up against Mattern's {K-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}. The flop came down an interesting {Q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} and kept things pretty even. The {J-Hearts} turn made a straight for Mattern and he dodged many outs on the river when the {2-Clubs} fell. Mattern, who had been getting a massage, got out of his chair to pay the masseuse and the dealer mistakenly thought that Mattern believed he had been eliminated.

"You won," said the dealer. Mattern replied, "Oh I know. It's very surprising. It happens once in a blue moon." He's still short, but at a more comfortable 9,000.

269 Runners... Probably

There were well over 270 runners registered at the start of the day, but not all of them actually made it as far as the tournament area. After playing the first couple levels with empty seats scattered around the room, five or six tables have now been broken and the official number on the board is 269.

Among those who were registered to play today but never made it were PokerStars Sports Star Boris Becker and Team PokerStars Pros Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier and Sandra Naujoks. We presume they will be playing tomorrow. Rather less fortunate is Dutch pro Jasper Wetemans. He was under the impression that he was registered for tomorrow, so spent this afternoon drinking instead. He discovered his mistake when some buddies called to see where he was. He's coming down now. With apparently seven beers inside of him. Good luck, Mr. Wetemans!

Action Not So Wild

Aside from the occasional spectacular exit, much of the action thus far, in traditional early-Day-1 style, has consisted of small pots with no showdown.

For example, a gentleman raised in mid position and Daniel Negreanu in the small blind made the call. They saw a {9-Clubs} {8-Hearts} {7-Diamonds} flop and Negreanu bet out 800; his opponent folded and Negreanu ever so slightly upped his stack to 28,000.

A few tables over, Dara O'Kearney on the button called a raise to 450 from under the gun and he and his opponent saw a {6-Spades} {3-Hearts} {3-Spades} flop which both players checked. Mr. Under The Gun checked the {J-Hearts} turn as well, and then promptly folded to a 550 bet from O'Kearney, who edged up to 26,000.

Chips are always going to fly when someone finds a big hand, though - we arrived just in time to see a clearly delighted Jesper Hougaard raking in a huge pot and tossing his pocket kings back to the dealer. Lucky man, he's up to around 50,000.

Confounded Negreanu Makes The Right Call

On a {3-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{Q-Hearts} board with about 2,800 in the pot, Daniel Negreanu bet 1,250. His opponent min-raised to 2,500 and sent a befuddled Negreanu into the tank. "There's only one hand I can beat," murmured Negreanu. He made the call and his opponent turned over {A-Diamonds}{J-Clubs}.

Negreanu tabled {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs} and was relieved to win the pot. "Alright, there were two hands I could beat!" he said, upping his back to around 30,000.

Hougaard Chipping Up

With the board reading {8-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}, action was checked to Jesper Hougaard and he bet 400 into the pot. It folded around to the player in the big blind and he made it 1,000 to go. Hougaard called, landing the {8-Diamonds} on the turn. His opponent bet 1,550 and Hougaard took his time, making the call after a few moments.

The river brought the {4-Clubs} and the big blind fired 3,125 into the middle. Hougaard quickly matched it and his opponent immediately mucked. Hougaard opted not to show and is up to 39,000 after the hand.

Life's a Bichon

There was around 12,500 in the pot by the turn of the {9-Diamonds} {3-Spades} {J-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} board, when the gentleman in the small blind bet out 6,100. Thomas Bichon stared expressionlessly at the felt for a while before making the call.

They saw a {6-Hearts} river and this time Mr. Small Blind thought about it for a while before betting out 5,000. Bichon, his face still completely blank, tanked up for some time, and then passed, leaving himself on just 12,300. Mr. Small Blind flashed him the {J-Clubs}.
