Day 1b Completed
Season 5 of the Latin American Poker Tour Chile continued on Thursday at the Enjoy Casino & Resort in Vina del Mar with Day 1b of the Main Event, which attracted 367 players. Combined with Day 1a’s 284, that brought the total to 651 players, surpassing last year’s field of 621 players and creating a prize pool of $651,840.
Among the players who took a shot at the $129,470 first-place prize on Thursday were Team PokerStars Pros Nacho Barbero, Humberto Brenes, and Andre Akkari, Flavio Reis, Eric Brenes, Luis Montano and Thiago "XtheDecanoX" Nishijima, a Brazilian online pro who has had quite a bit of success on both the live and virtual felt.
Unfortunately not everyone could survive. Brenes lasted until after the dinner break, but soon met his demise. It happened when he defended his big blind after the button had raised, leading to a flop. Brenes committed the rest of his stack with , his opponent called with and while the turn changed nothing, the completed the opponent's straight draw and ended Brenes' tournament.
Likewise, Akkari put up a good fight for much of the day, but couldn’t hold on after he lost the majority of his chips in a monster pot after hitting an ace with only to have his opponent hit a runner-runner flush with . A short time later, action folded to Akkari on the button and he moved all in for around 12,000, which the player in the big blind called.

The flop gave Akkari a pair and a straight draw, but he was behind his opponent's flopped pair of jacks. Neither the turn nor river were what Akkari needed, and he was eliminated from the tournament.
Others who found themselves on the rail were Barbero, Ariel Celestino, Wilmer Gomez, Miguel Solano, Samar Hodali, Alex Brenes and Fernando Araujo.
Those who managed to punch their ticket to Day 2 were Joao Lopes, who emerged as the Day 1b chip leader with an impressive 207,000; as well as, Alejandro Vargas (162,600), Odilon Machuca (143,500), Julio Kim (130,600), Javier Pinto (127,700), William Espinosa (123,000) and Luis Montano (118,000).
The approximately 101 surviving players will combine with the 89 remaining players from Day 1a and return to action on Friday at 1200 CLST (0800 PDT) for Day 2, which will be covered in great detail right here on PokerNews.

With around 10,000 in the pot and a flop of , Leandro Csome led out for 3,000 from early position and was quickly met with a raise to 6,000 from middle position. The player on the button then flatted, and Csome pushed back to the tune of 12,000. The MP player folded, while the button made the call, leaving himself just 16,000 behind.
When the appeared on the turn, Csome grabbed a stack of chips and spiked it into the pot. To call would cost the button all his chips, but he decided against it and gave Csome the pot.

We thought it'd be fun to tell you a little bit more about our host city courtesy of Lynn Gilmartin's Jet Set, so without further adieu:
Things to Do
Playing poker and chilling out on the beach are the obvious tasks to check off your to-do list when in Viña del Mar, but several attractions worth visiting if you're left with a little extra time.
Casablanca Wineries
Chile's harvest season is in March, which is the best time to visit the Casablanca Valley. If you love a good Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay, the 45-minute trip to this world-renowned wine region is well worth the time.
Nightlife
The casino is said to be the center of Viña del Mar’s social life. As you would expect from a resort town, Viña offers plenty of nightlife options, no matter what day of the week it is. If you want to venture outside of the casino, then according to a NY Times article, there’s a rock bar called Bar Spartako on Avenida Valparaíso 90, which is a great place to enjoy a few beers. Just a few blocks away from there is Café Journal on Variante Agua Santa, a quiet café by day, and a ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s disco by night.
Reñaca
This is Chile's most famous beach, thanks to its luxury shopping, dining, entertainment, and nightlife. This is known as the place “to be seen.” Reñaca is located just five kilometers from Viña del Mar, and after doing a quick search on YouTube, to me it almost looks like the Cancun of Chile. The video below may not show off the views of the town, but it certainly shows some other "views of Chile" that you may appreciate.
After an early-position player had limped, Thiago "XTheDecanoX" Nishijima raised to 2,600 from middle position. Action folded all the way around to the players in the big blind, who decided to move all in for somewhere around 16,000. EP got out of the way while Nishijima made a reluctant call.

"Cinco," Nishijima requested after seeing how bad of a spot he was in. Ask and ye shall receive . . . . The big blind was clearly dejected as the railbirds reacted sharply. Neither the turn nor river were if any consequence, and the big blind sought consolation from his supporters while Nishijima chipped up to 80K.

An under-the-gun player limped and Flavio Reis opted to raise to 3,600 from middle position. Only the UTG player made the call and it was heads up to the flop. UTG check-called a bet of 4,100 before shoving all in on the turn. Reis, who had 20,200 back, thought for about 15 seconds before calling off.

Reis had flopped a set and was ahead, but needed to dodge the open-ended straight draw of his opponent. He did just that as the appeared on the river. With that, Reis is up to 60,000.
