Top 5 Poker Movies You Must Watch

Level 12 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Over the past century, poker has permeated pop culture, especially when it comes to motion pictures. Long before the “Poker Boom”, and even before the World Series of Poker (WSOP) was a thing, poker had already made its big screen debut.

Over the decades, poker fans have been treated to a plethora of poker movies, some good and others not so much. Some well-received poker films include the western comedy Maverick (1994), Survivor host Jeff Probst’s debut film Finder’s Fee (2001), the improv-inspired The Grand (2007), indie comedy darling Hitting the Nuts (2010), and the high-profile Hollywood flick Molly’s Game (2017).

All of those are among the best poker movies of all time, and if this article was “Top 10” instead of “Top 5 Poker Movies,” chances are they’d make the final list. However, the PokerNews crew got together, along with input from social media, to determine the top five must-watch poker movies of all time.

Depuis Falls To O'Dell

Level 12 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Dakotah O'Dell raised to 8,000 from the hijack and Jordan Depuis called in the big blind.

On the {a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{7-Hearts} flop, Depuis bet 10,000 from the big blind and O'Dell called.

The turn {7-Clubs} saw the same action repeat, Depuis sizing up to 25,000 this time.

Depuis checked the {9-Hearts} and O'Dell moved all in for 65,000 effective. Depuis quickly counted out his stack before tossing in a chip for the call.

Jordan Depuis: {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Dakotah O'Dell: {a-Hearts}{j-Hearts}

O'Dell had rivered a flush which was good enough for the pot and Depuis exited the tournament just after coming back from break.

Depuis Holds Top Pair

Level 11 : Blinds 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Jordan Depuis
Jordan Depuis

Action was picked up on the turn between Jordan Depuis in early position and an opponent in the big blind.

On a board reading {6-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}, Depuis bet 7,000 and the big blind quickly called.

The turn of {j-Diamonds} saw the big blind check again, and Depuis bet to the tune of 12,000. The big blind contemplated their decision for a bit but tossed in the call after some thought.

The {q-Spades} river checked through and Depuis turned over {a-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} for a pair of jacks. That was good against his opponents {5-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} for bottom pair with a missed straight draw, and Depuis raked in the pot.

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Lauren Williams Caudle
Lauren Williams Caudle

Action was picked up on the turn between Lauren Williams Caudle in early position and an opponent in the big blind, with 27,000 in the center.

With a board reading {2-Spades}{9-Spades}{10-Clubs}{4-Spades}, the big blind bet 17,000, which saw Caudle raise to 37,000. The big blind considered their option for a long time before re-raising to 60,000. Caudle considered her options and decided to move all in for 63,000 and her opponent called.

Lauren Williams Caudle: {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds}
Opponent: {2-Clubs}{2-Hearts}

The river {q-Spades} gave her the winning flush to crack her opponent's set and survive in the tournament.

Ana Lennon
Ana Lennon

Christopher Taylor moved in his final 15,000 from the cutoff and on the button, Ana Lennon called to put him at risk.

Christopher Taylor: {k-Spades}{4-Clubs}
Ana Lennon: {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs}

The board ran out {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{7-Clubs} and queens up was good enough for Lennon to eliminate Taylor while her chip stack soared high.

Thomas Finds His Nine

Level 9 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante

Colton Thomas raised to 3,500 from late position and a player in the hijack moved all in for 22,000, folding out all other players. When the action got back to Thomas he called and turned up their hands.

Opponent: {q-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}
Colton Thomas: {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}

Thomas was left drawing to one of two outs, which did appear on the {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{5-Hearts} flop. The {5-Clubs} turn killed any hopes of backdoor draws for his opponent, and the river {8-Spades} killed any hope of surviving in the tournament.

"I can't prove this to you guys," remarked Thomas after the hand "but that's the hand I have tattooed to my back."
