Cimpan Bluffs Ferguson Out of a Pot; Opts to Rub it in a Little

Action folded around the table to Chris 'Jesus' Ferguson in the small blind who made it 150,000 to go. Cornel Andrew Cimpan tossed in the extra 100,000 it cost him to call in the big blind and the two went heads-up to the flop, which came {J-Hearts} {A-Clubs} {8-Hearts}.

Both players checked the flop, opting to move straight to 4th Street which was the {6-Hearts}. Ferguson then fired a bet of 225,000, which Cimpan called with an apparent sense of certainty.

The last card off the deck was the {3-Spades}, which prompted Ferguson to pass the action over to Cimpan, who fired a 325,000 bullet. After a brief moment of consideration, Ferguson eventually decided to fold. Cimpan then held his hole cards high in the air, and even dangerously close to Ferguson's face (the two are sitting directly next to each other), saying, "Ten high, baby! Ten high!"

The win drove Cimpan past the two million mark in chips for the first time in the tournament.

Sowers Doubles Through Nguyen

Mike Sowers knew what he had to do when action folded to him in the small blind. He moved all in for about 700,000 with {A-Clubs} {5-Clubs}. Binh Nguyen quickly called with {A-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}, priming the railbirds for an elimination. But Sowers hit the flop in a very hard way, as it came down {k-Clubs} {5-Hearts} {10-Clubs} to gave him a pair and a flush draw. Neither the turn {7-Spades} nor the {4-Diamonds} that hit the river improved Nguyen. He's down to about 1.0 million in chips; Sowers doubled to 1.4 million.

And so the search for two more eliminations goes on.

Cornel Climbing

Cornel Andrew Cimpan just took down another small pot to climb a little bit higher up the leaderboard and now finds himself sitting right around average in chips.

Chris Karagulleyan started things off with a raise to 125,000 from early position. Cimpan made the call from the button and Payman Arjang joined them from the big blind.

The flop came {J-Clubs} {9-Clubs} {6-Diamonds} and both Payman and Chris checked to Cornel, who fired a 200,000 bet, which was enough to chase everyone away.

After having faced elimination on more than one occasion today, Cimpan now sits with a very workable stack, about 1.8 million chips.

Cimpan Doubles through Ferguson

Luck really hasn't been on Chris Ferguson's side today. He opened a pot from the cutoff for 125,000. Cornel Andrew Cimpan was next to act. He announced raise, cut out 125,000 and threw it into the pot, then looked at his remaining stack and said, "All in." Ferguson asked for a count (about 600,000 back to him) then called with {J-Clubs} {J-Diamonds}. Cimpan gave a short fist pump as he opened {A-Diamonds} {A-Clubs}. Those two aces matched up with another on the {3-Hearts} {A-Spades} {4-Hearts} flop. When the turn fell {K-Hearts}, Ferguson was drawing dead. He paid Cimpan off after the river {4-Spades} hit the board.

Sowers Getting Short

Mike Sowers has been healthy in chips for long stretches of this tournament, but he's now a decided short stack. He raised to 125,000 and was called by the big blind, Pat Walsh. Both players checked the {9-Hearts} {2-Hearts} {9-Diamonds} flop. Walsh checked again when the turn fell {A-Hearts}, prompting Sowers to fire out for 175,000. Walsh quickly check-raised him all in. The stacks were close, but it didn't matter; Sowers folded after a minute, leaving himself with 750,000 in chips.

Spotlight: Chris Karagulleyan

Chris Karagulleyan has been involved in more than his share of pots in the last half hour. Two times, he called a raise in position only to see one of the blinds behind him squeeze him out. The first time Karagulleyan showed {A-?} {10-?} when he folded to a raise by Mike Sowers; the second time he showed {A-?} {Q-?} before folding to a raise from Binh Nguyen.

But Karagulleyan has taken down a few pots, too. He raised to 125,000 preflop and was called by Cornel Andrew Cimpan. Both players checked a flop of {9-Clubs} {7-Diamonds} {8-Hearts}. Cimpan bet 200,000 on the {4-Clubs} turn and was quickly called by Karagulleyan. Both players again checked the {2-Clubs} river. Cimpan showed {3-Spades} {3-Diamonds}, but that was second-best to Karagulleyan's {A-Hearts} {8-Diamonds}.

Happy Birthday, Ali!

For as much as the action has slowed inside today's makeshift poker room, it's picked up out here in the media hallway.

PokerRoad Radio personality and NBC poker commentator Ali Nejad was just delivered a surprise birthday cake by a group of friends and the Happy Birthday song ensued.

Yep, we know this has absolutely nothing to do with the poker tournament you're probably here to read about, but it's the most action we've seen in the last 10 minutes.
