Familiar Faces Make it Through to Day 2; Piet Bakker Leads

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Piet Bakker
Piet Bakker

Day 1 of the 2016 World Poker Tour Amsterdam Main Event started today in the Dutch capital with a total field of 115 players. Of those 115, 52 will return on Thursday for Day 2 after nine grueling levels.

All eyes were on Farid Yachou, the player that played his first big live event here last year and ended up winning it for €201,000 ($225,073). His amazing story didn't end there, things only became more of a fairytale when he won the WPT Tournament of Champions last month for another $381,600. With just two mayor events played and two wins, could he continue his amazing rush here back on home soil? Well, he'll still have some options to win this event, but Day 1a wasn't good for him. He didn't shy away from big pots and ended up busting when he ran pocket threes into pocket queens. With reentry allowed, Yachou will likely be back, though.

Yachou wasn't the first to bust, as that honor belonged to Vincent Gabel when his bluff with a flush draw was called by top set. Noah Boeken ran into a set early on as well, though the 2013 Master Classics of Poker champion had a set himself when the money went in.

Boeken's friend Chino Rheem was also in attendance, though he didn't last much longer than Boeken did. Rheem three-bet someone preflop, got cold-called, and continued to three-barrel his stack off with an unimproved nine-three off suit. The player in position simply called with his full house and Rheem was halfway out the door by the time the cards were opened up.

Some players in the field were seen multi-tabling. Not that they were running around between different tournaments like you sometimes see players with bracelet bets do at the World Series of Poker, but rather these players were seen combining live and online. Several players were seen grinding on phones, and Jason Wheeler made things even more extreme by having his laptop out for the last couple of hours. He did well in the live event by making Day 2 with a stack of over 100,000, and how he did online we'll have to have him tell us tomorrow.

A battalion of recognizable faces had swarmed to sunny Amsterdam to play this event. Besides the names already mentioned, the likes of Louis Salter, Felipe Ramos, Dietrich Fast, Rumen Nanev, and Tony Dunst played today.

Not only international players flocked Holland Casino Amsterdam, too, as lots of local players were in attendance. Players like Govert Metaal, Jasper Wetemans, Joep van den Bijgaart, and bracelet winner Marcel Vonk all spent the day playing poker, though not all survived.

The regular with the most Dutch name of all, Piet Bakker, finished on top of the chip counts for Day 1a, ending the day with 241,000. The biggest hand he played was one where he flopped an open-ended straight draw with ten-eight on nine-seven-five. The six on the turn resulted in both Anthony Zinno and another player all in, and Bakker was the one raking in all the chips after both players turned over just an eight for a lower straight.

While most of the survivors will return to Holland Casino on Thursday, all of them have the option to play Wednesday's Day 1b and move their best stack forward. Players that busted today will also be able to reenter tomorrow, and if that's not enough, all busted players have the option to buy in right before the start of Day 2 as well for the maximum amount of three entries per player.

PokerNews.com will be back in Holland Casino for Day 1b on Wednesday at 2 p.m. local time, and we hope you'll be there following along.

Van den Bijgaart Busts Ramos

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Felipe Ramos
Felipe Ramos

It was 5-way to the flop in what would become the downfall of Brazilian poker player Felipe Ramos.

The flop was {7-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{9-Clubs} and action checked to Joep van den Bijgaart on the button. The Dutchman made a bet of 6,000 and Ramos raised to 13,800 with 40,600 behind. Action folded back to Van den Bijgaart who shoved all in after tanking for just a bit. Now it was Ramos doing the thinking, and eventually he called all in.

Felipe Ramos: {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Joep van den Bijgaart: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

Ramos needed a club to stay alive, but wouldn't get it: {Q-Hearts} on the turn and {5-Hearts} on the river. Exit Ramos, big stack for Van den Bijgaart.

The flop came an all spades {A-Spades}{J-Spades}{3-Spades} and Rozema checked. Deadman bet 3,000 and Rozema called. The {6-Clubs} fell on the turn and this time around Rozema check called a bet of 11,000.

The {K-Clubs} completed the board and Rozema checked a third time. Deadman bet 23,700 with about 20,000 or so behind. Rozema tanked for a fair bit before tossing in his cards.

Farid Yachou Eliminated

Level 5 : 150/300, 50 ante
Farid Yachou
Farid Yachou

Last years champion Farid Yachou has been eliminated. We caught him on the rail, and he was kind enough to tell us the details of his bust out hand.

One player limped in and Yachou raised to 1,050. Rumen Nanev made the call and another player squeezed to 4,200. The first limper folded and action was back on Yachou. The Dutchman shoved all in for about 19,000 and his neighbor Nanev repushed for 31,000. The third player tanked for a bit before folding.

Nanev had the better hand with {Q-}{Q-} as Yachou tabled {3-}{3-}. The board blanked out for Yachou and the pot went to Nanev.

Yachou has two cashes on his resume, and both are wins. He still has a shot to go 3 for 3 in WPT tournaments, as he's determined to reenter tomorrow on Day 1b.

Rheem Goes Home

Level 5 : 150/300, 50 ante
Chino Rheem
Chino Rheem

"What hand did he have?" asked Mark Roovers as Chino Rheem was making his departure.

"Nine three" answered Alberto Stegeman.

"What?" exclaimed Roovers, who double checked with the dealer.

The table was still a bit in disbelief about what had just happened. Here's the details of the hand.

From first position Mark Roovers opened for 700 and from the hijack Chino Rheem three-bet to 1,900. On the button Patrick Lin cold called and Roovers called as well.

The flop came {K-Clubs}{5-Spades}{6-Diamonds} and Roovers checked. Rheem bet 2,400 and Lin called, Roovers folded.

The {K-Hearts} fell on the turn and Rheem bet 6,500. Lin called again, while still enjoying a massage.

The {2-Clubs} completed the board and Rheem shoved for about 30,000. Lin simply tossed in a single 5,000-chip to call.

Rheem got up from the table and motioned he was beat and wanted to muck. Lin showed his {6-Clubs}{6-Spades} and the dealer turned over Rheem's {9-Spades}{3-Hearts} while the 3-time WPT champion Rheem made his way to the exit.

While the players jaws were still on the ground, the dealer got underway dealing a new hand and Lin started stacking his 90,000 stack.

Louis Salter Hits the Rail

Level 5 : 150/300, 50 ante
Louis Salter
Louis Salter

We ran into Louis Salter on the rail who was kind enough to fill us in on the details of his bust out hand.

The player in seat 9 limped in and his example was followed by his neighbor. Louis Salter raised to 900 and action folded around to the first limper who limp reraised. Salter was the only one calling.

The flop came {9-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{5-Spades} and the limp reraiser bet 1,500. Salter raised to 6,000 and was called. An off suit {Q-} hit the turn and Salter shoved all in. His opponent called with {A-Hearts}{Q-Hearts} and had Salter looking for a diamond or jack with his {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}. The river blanked and Salter hit the rail.

Van Brugge Busted

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante
Kees van Brugge
Kees van Brugge

Kees van Brugge was first to act and made it 500 from first position. He got called in no less than 5 spots, amongst them his neighbor Tonny Krijn.

"Woah, this ain't a bounty boys" Van Brugge commented while the dealer got underway fanning {4-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}.

Richard Milne checked from the big blind and Van Brugge shoved all in for 3,775. Krijn reshoved for what appeared to be 12,800 and all the other players immediately got out of the way.

Kees van Brugge: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Tonny Krijn: {K-Spades}{K-Diamonds}

The {4-Hearts} turn and river {4-Clubs} made both players a full house, leaving the pot to Krijn. Van Brugge wished the players at his table, and Krijn in particular, good luck, and made his way to the exit.

Fast Busts Boeken With Set Over Set

Level 3 : 75/150, 25 ante
Noah Boeken
Noah Boeken

Noah Boeken, the first ever Dutch EPT champion and victorious in Holland's biggest tournament the MCOP back in 2013, has just departed the WPT Amsterdam Main Event. His chips are now in possession of his former neighbor Dietrich Fast.

From middle position, Marc MacDonnell opened for 400 and two to his left hijack Dietrich Fast three-bet to 1,200. Noah Boeken cold called from the cutoff and MacDonnell called as well.

The {J-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{A-Diamonds} flop saw MacDonnell and Fast both check. Boeken bet 2,000 and MacDonnell folded, just Fast called. Fast continued with his more passive approach with the {7-Diamonds} on the turn, checking to Boeken. Boeken fired 4,300 and Fast made the call.

The river came the {10-Diamonds} and Fast checked for the third time. Boeken shoved all in for an undisclosed amount, and Fast made the Phil Hellmuth-patented insta call, showing his {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} instantly. Boeken had his {5-Hearts}{5-Spades} open for just a second before tossing them in the muck upon finding out his set was no good anymore.

Boeken has the option to reenter tomorrow if he wants to, today he won't get a second shot at it.

The World Poker Tour Amsterdam Main Event Starts Today!

Holland Casino Amsterdam
Holland Casino Amsterdam

The World Poker Tour's next event is here, with the WPT Amsterdam €3,300 Main Event kicking off today, May 10, and running through May 14. That cards will be in the air at 2 p.m. local time.

Holland Casino will play host to the tournament, and it will allow reentry into Day 1b for players eliminated on Day 1a. The event will also utilize a "best stack forward" format, giving players that bag on Day 1a a chance to play Day 1b in an attempt to bag up more chips and bring their biggest stack to Day 2.

Last year at WPT Amsterdam, a field of 341 showed out, and Farid Yachou took it down for €201,000. Yachou's run became even more glorified when he went on to win the WPT Tournament of Champions at the end of the season, taking $381,600 in true Cinderella fashion, and you can read more about his storied run here.

In addition to the €3,300 Main Event, players are offered a pricier €6,000 High Roller, running May 9-10. Last year's edition of this one attracted 76 entries and saw Jason Wheeler walk away with the €125,000 top prize. After Day 1 of that event this year, 76 entries were tallied with the UK's Frank Williams finished atop the 42 survivors. Although we won't be providing full live coverage of that event, you can expect us to sprinkle in some updates here and there.

Stay tuned for coverage, as the event will be kicking off today and great things are expected.
