Starting and Restarting WSOP Events

With a huge field today, both the start time for today's event and the restart times for both Events 1 & 2 from yesterday have been adjusted. Perhaps we should address the rules on starting tournaments for this year's WSOP.

All noon starts will play until 2 AM and will restart the following day at 2 PM. Obviously the start times may be delayed but notice that yesterday's event began a bit late but still ended last night at 2 AM. Today's noon event began a full hour late but we have been assured it also will end at 2 AM tonight.

The WSOP staff basically wants players to know that they will never play longer than the announced schedule. The one issue players are talking about is the late restarts. Today the restart of Event #1 was scheduled for 2 PM and with no way to notify players, they all showed up at 2. With the delay they will not be restarting until 4:30, however, those 97 players must still play down to a final table of nine tonight. That could make for a very late night.

The start of the final table will be set only when Day Two is over, so players will have sufficient down time before coming back tomorrow. We have been told a minimum of twelve hours will be scheduled between the end of Day Two and the start of the final table, the following day.

Jesus Has Left the Building

Chris "Jesus" Ferguson just busted out. On a flop of {K-Spades}{9-Spades}{7-Hearts}, he moved all in over the top and his opponent sat for several minutes deliberating a call. One of the other players at the table called a clock on her. With twenty seconds left, she called and flipped over {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}. Jesus tabled {8-Spades}{6-Spades} for a flush draw and an open-ended straight draw. The turn was the {J-Diamonds} and the river was the {2-Diamonds}. Jesus busted out and gave his opponent a big hug before he headed to the rail.

Negreanu Takes Another Scalp

The button raised to 250 pre-flop and Daniel Negreanu called from the big blind. The flop was {K-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{2-Hearts}. Negreanu checked, the button bet 350 and Negreanu raised to 750. The button moved all in for his last 800 and Negreanu called. The button showed {A-Hearts}{8-Spades} for middle pair and the nut flush draw while Negreanu tabled the {4-Hearts}{7-Hearts} for the flopped flush. The turn was the {4-Diamonds} and the river was the {7-Clubs} and Negreanu increased his stack to 11,500.

Minneapolis Jim Meehan Eliminated

On a flop of {10-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{4-Clubs}, one player moved all in for 2700. Minneapolis Jim Meehan took almost five minutes to decide what to do. He stood up several times and examined the flop.

"That's two clubs and one heart, right?" he asked the dealer. "I want to make sure. I'm surrounded by 3,000 monkeys."

"Are you calling us monkeys?" asked his opponent.

"No. Not you guys. You're all world champions. I'm talking about the rest of the idiots!" he replied.

He apologized for the delay to the rest of his table.

"I'm lost in this hand," he said. "I just keeping thinking the {9-Clubs} is the {6-Clubs}."

His opponent called a clock on him and Meehan eventually called. Meehan flipped over {K-Clubs}{2-Clubs} while his opponent showed {J-Clubs}{8-Clubs}. The turn was the {Q-Spades} and his opponent took over the lead with a straight. Meehan still had outs for a flush but missed when the {4-Diamonds} fell on the river.

Meehan mumbled an F-bomb while he headed to the rail and said, "See all you (bleeping) guys at the Resurrection."

Alternates

With the Event #1 restart being delayed until 4:30 from its original restart time of 2 PM, the hope is that most if not all of the huge number of alternates will get seated before the end of Level Two at 3:10 PM.

Alternates are waiting with patience for their number to be called.

Mark Seif Doubles Up

An unknown player raised to 275 pre-flop and Mark Seif called. The flop was {A-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{4-Clubs}. The unknown player bet 775 and Seif raised to 2,250, putting his opponent all in. The unknown called and Seif showed 9-9 for middle set while his opponent tabled A-Q for top pair. The turn was the {3-Clubs}, the river was the {Q-Spades}, and Seif scooped a huge pot. He's up to 5,800 in chips.
