Run, Johnny, Run!

Now that Patrik Antonius, John Juanda and Huck Seed have sprinted though the doors of the Amazon Room and charged to their seats (Seed running as he balanced what appeared to be a container of soup) the action has resumed its usual hum. We will play three more 90-minute levels tonight.

Bald Eagle Makes Galfond Extinct

Steve Zolotow
Steve Zolotow

No-Limit Hold'em:

Steve Zolotow is from a different generation of poker player -- the generation that usually adopts a cautious strategy in tournament play. Sitting in middle position, he called behind an opening raise to 4,500. Action passed to Phil Galfond on the button. He three-bet to 16,700, folding the original raiser and bringing the action back to Zolotow.

"The Bald Eagle", as Zolotow is known, went into the tank for more than a minute before announcing he was all in. Galfond resignedly said, "I call," and pushed his whole stack of 117,800 into the middle. He was the player at risk, but he had a slight edge in the hand with {q-Spades} {q-Clubs} against Zolotow's {a-Spades} {k-Clubs}. There was a king on the flop, an ace on the turn, and no queen on the river of a {4-Hearts} {9-Clubs} {k-Spades} {a-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} board. Zolotow collected the pot with two pair, aces and kings, and knocked out Galfond.

Zolotow is now among the chip leaders with 420,000 chips.

Arturo Diaz Eliminated by Alexander Kostritsyn

Pot-Limit Omaha

There was already 43,500 in the pot when we came up to this hand on the turn, the board reading {J-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{4-Spades}{10-Diamonds}. Alexander Kostritsyn checked, Vitaly Lunkin bet the pot, Arturo Diaz called and Kostritsyn re-potted all-in. Lunkin snap-folded and Diaz called off his last 24,000.

Diaz {K-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts} (open-ended draw to the high straight, gutshot to the lower straight)
Kostritsyn {J-Spades}{10-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} (top two pair, open-ended straight draw)

The {Q-Hearts} on the river made Kostritsyn a queen-high straight, eliminating Diaz. Kostritsyn raked in the pot, and is now on 430,000 in chips, good for the current chip lead.

Schulman Shrinks Minieri's Stack

No-Limit Hold'em:

Dario Minieri checked a {10-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{k-Spades} board, and with 35,000 already in the middle, Nick Schulman bet 13,500. Minieri called to see the {8-Clubs} on the river. No more checking. Super Dario bet a substantial 37,000. Unfortunately for him, Schulman called. "Queen-jack," said Minieri, but unsurprisingly, a missed Broadway draw wasn't good. Schulman showed {a-Spades}{a-Hearts} and scooped the nice pot, building his stack to 265,000. Minieri's down to 90,000 at dinner.

Serock's Aces Hold

Pot-Limit Omaha

Jeff Lisandro opened for 4,000 from early position and Joe Serock called from the big blind. Both players checked the {Q-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop. The turn was the {6-Diamonds} and Serock led out for 8,000. Lisandro called. Both players checked the {3-Diamonds} on the river.

Serock showed {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}{10-Clubs}{9-Spades} for aces up. Lisandro missed his flush draw with {K-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{5-Spades} and Serock took down the pot, increasing his stack to 340,000.

Morrison Doubles Giang

Pot-Limit Omaha:

We caught a giant pot brewing on an {8-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}{2-Spades} board. Chau Giang potted, and his lone opponent, Kirk Morrison, didn't have much more than that bet behind. He took about four minutes to decide what to do, picking up his cards and fake folding a few times. Eventually he moved all in, and Giang called the extra. Morrison turned over {a-Hearts}{j-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{4-Hearts} for a wheel. It was good, but Giang held on to his cards anyway while the dealer counted down the 84,000 in Morrison's stack. The dealer pushed the pot to Morrison, who started to drag it in but paused and waited while Giang checked his cards again. Finally Chau nodded again and said the pot was his but still didn't let go of his cards until the whole transaction was over and the dealer insisted.

Morrison is up to 335,000 after doubling through Chau, who was left with 105,000, but looks much shorter since he's got most of his money in four T25,000 chips.

Grinder Doing His Thing

Pot-Limit Omaha:

The small pots are often just as important as the big ones. Michael Mizrachi just won a small one from David Benyamine in a cautiously played hand. Benyamine limped in pre-flop and Mizrachi checked from the big blind. Both players then checked the {7-Diamonds} {4-Hearts} {7-Hearts} flop.

When the turn came {10-Diamonds}, Mizrachi tried a bet of 3,000. Benyamine called to the {10-Hearts} river, where Mizrachi bet 10,000. Benyamine seemed surprised by the size of the bet but was informed by the dealer that it was exactly pot-sized. Benyamine called, then mucked when Mizrachi opened {a-Hearts} {3-Hearts} {a-Clubs} {3-Spades} for a heart flush.

Daniel "djk123" Kelly Doubles Through Isaac Haxton

No-Limit Hold'em

Phil Hellmuth opened for 5,500 from late position, Daniel Kelly moved all-in for 14,300 from the small blind and Isaac Haxton put in a min-raise to 23,100 from the big blind. An irritated Hellmuth folded and the cards went on their backs.

Kelly {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}
Haxton {A-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Kelly flopped a set of sevens, the board running out {4-Spades}{5-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{2-Spades} to give him a much-needed double-up.
