Pete Giordano is sitting behind a massive stack of 25,000 right now. And we aren't surprised, because Giordano was one of the biggest forces in online poker during the poker boom.
Giordano, known as "The Beat" in online circles, was once given the distinction as the best online poker player in the world by a popular online poker forum. He's also had some live success in his career, cashing four times at the World Series of Poker — three times in the Main Event.
If there's an early favorite in this massive field, I think we've found him.

We recently started our quest to find the biggest stacks in the field, and that lead us to Steve Patch who sits with about 25,000. We asked the table how he got there, and they gladly obliged.
Apparently with a board exposed in the middle of the felt three players got into a raising match that ended with two of them all in and a call from Patch.
Patch:

Opponent 2:
Patch was in a really bad spot, he was trailing two opponents and desperately needed some help if he wished to scoop this pot. He received plenty of help when the fell on the turn and even more when the landed on the river. Patch went run-run full house and knocked out two players in doing so.

With a board reading Marcel Luske check-raised a bet to 1,600. His opponent in late position made the call and the dealer placed the on the river.
Luske was not going to check anymore and fired out a bet of 1,500. The late position player made the call and tabled for a pair of aces and Luske countered with for the straight.

Most of the players in this field only come out for this very event, so to have a star like Dennis Phillips at their table is an exciting experience. Some of Phillips' tablemates asked about his back-to-back World Series of Poker Main Event runs in 2008 and 2009, and he happily obliged.
We overheard Phillips reminiscing about his brutal bustout hand during the 2009 Main Event. Phillips was knocked out in 45th place when his lost to after all the chips went in preflop. The story spurred some discussion from the many observers on hand for today's Seniors Event.
Phillips is up to 18,200 today and is one of the leaders in his section of the Amazon Room.

We just found Ken "Teach" Aldridge seated in the Brasilia Room. Aldridge is decked our in his usual yellow attire and wearing the World Series of Poker bracelet he won in 2009. That year, Aldridge bested a field of 1,459 players in the $1,500 Six-Handed No Limit Hold'em event to scoop a top prize of $428,259.
In total, Aldridge has close to $1 million in live tournament cashes. A final table in this event will surely get him to that milestone.
