Germany’s Fedor Holz leads 28 surviving players at the end of Day 1 in Event #87: $100,000 High Roller No-Limit Hold’em at the 2021 World Series of Poker. The last high roller event of the series attracted a total of 53 runners on Day 1, and more are expected before the end of late registration at the beginning of Day 2.

Holz has the lead in part thanks to a double-up through Nick Petrangelo just after the day’s halfway point. The German poker star will return with over 3 million chips to take a shot at his third WSOP gold bracelet. Not far behind are David Peters, Orpen Kisacikoglu, and Sam Grafton.

Peters jumped up the leaderboard in the last level when he busted Justin Bonomo with a pair of queens. Kisacikoglu busted Jason Koon late in the evening to move above 2 million chips, and he added more before the end of the night to set up a return with just over 3 million. Grafton found momentum late with the elimination of Mateos, and he will return looking to improve on his 13th place finish in the 2019 offering of this event.

Sorel Mizzi raised to 45,000 under the gun and Jason Koon called from the small blind while Orpen Kisacikoglu came along from the big blind.

The flop was {j-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{q-Spades} and Mizzi bet 35,000. Koon raised to 105,000 and Kisacikoglu called before Mizzi got out of the way.

The turn was {7-Spades} and Koon shoved for 350,000. Kisacikoglu called quickly and turned over {q-Clubs}{j-Hearts} for queens and jacks, while Koon tabled {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}.

The river was a brick for Koon and he was eliminated from the tournament, giving Kisacikoglu a pot that took him over the 2 million mark.

With over 100,000 in the pot and {k-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} on the board, Adrian Mateos checked from the big blind, Matthias Eibinger checked from under the gun, and Cary Katz bet 60,000.

Mateos called and Eibinger folded. The turn was {9-Clubs}.

Katz spent two time extensions considering his options before he shoved his last 375,000 into the middle. Mateos called and was covered. Katz turned over {k-Spades}{j-Spades} for a pair of kings and Mateos showed {j-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for the flush draw.

The river {3-Hearts} was a brick for Mateos and he was out of chips. Katz dragged the pot to move near 900,000 in Day 1 action.

Also at the table is Brian Rast, who just sat down with a fresh starting stack.

Action was picked up on the river as the board read {2-Spades}{8-Spades}{q-Spades}{3-Hearts}{k-Hearts}. Fedor Holz was in the big blind and jammed all in for about 450,000 into a pot of about 300,000.

Nick Petrangelo was under the gun and had a big decision on his hands. He went into the tank and used up two time extensions before calling.

Holz showed the {8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} for the set which was the winning hand as Petrangelo showed the {k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} and cut out the chips to send over to his right.
