Players Upset When Golden Nugget Cancels $1M Gtd. Poker Tournament After Level 1

Golden Nugget pulled the plug on a $1,200 buy-in, $1 million guarantee after the Grand Poker Series tournament had already begun Wednesday morning.

The Las Vegas card room would inevitably cancel the tournament and refund all players after receiving criticism from those who'd entered and expected to be playing for a seven-figure prize pool.

PokerNews spoke with the poker room's Director of Poker Operations, Joel Garcia, and a player who entered the tournament, David Mcconachie, to find out what happened.

The flop came 973. Deeb checked, Rheem bet, Deeb check-raised and Rheem called.

Deeb bet again on the 3 turn before both players checked the 9 river. Rheem had 108 for a missed straight draw while Deeb had just ace-high with A4 to take the pot.

Vengrin led fifth with open tens, Gorodinsky called, and Katz folded.

Vengrin led again on sixth with open two pair and Gorodinsky called.

Vengrin slowed down with a check on seventh, Gorodinsky bet, and Vengrin quickly called hoping to see a low. However, Gorodinsky announced three fours, and his trips were good as Vengrin could only frustratingly muck.

All four players checked on fifth. Seiver then bet again on sixth and Schreiber and Kupin called, while Eveslage got out of the way.

Seiver bet on seventh, but this time Schreiber came back with a raise. Kupin folded and Seiver called.

Schreiber showed 653 for a straight and Seiver mucked, muttering to himself as Schreiber scooped the pot.

Schindler took one and Daher stood pat. Schindler then led for a little under 50,000 before Daher raised to 240,000 and Schindler reluctantly called. Daher showed 8x6x5x3x2x for a monster hand to drag a massive one off Schindler.

"You should add Never Run Like Albert, NRLA," joked tablemate Philip Sternheimer, "Just get dealt a pat number seven."

Matusow checked once more on the J river and Morris shook his head before checking back. Matusow showed KJ for a runner-runner full house and Morris mucked what he said was a flopped flush.

"You flopped a flush?! Really? That's so sick!" Matusow said.

"He's like 1% to win," Morris said in dismay.
