Jonathan Tamayo
Jonathan Tamayo

Defending Main Event champion Jonathan Tamayo is back where it all began twelve months ago: Day 1d of the WSOP Main Event.

With the pressure off after last year's life-changing win, Tamayo says the game feels freer, even as he battles through a rough summer and mixed reactions at the table.

“There's always a shot,” he says. "Sitting down is just the first step in a thousand!"

Read the full interview to hear how he’s handling the spotlight, the swings, and what it’s really like chasing back-to-back glory.

Campins Slows Down Arthur; Cassis Fills Up to Triple

Level 3 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante

Riva Arthur had amassed a massive stack of more than 200,000 over the first two levels as she then tangled in a pot with Felipe Campins.

Campins had bet 1,600 from under the gun on a flop of J67 and Arthur called in the big blind. Campins bet another 3,000 on the 6 turn, Arthur raised to 7,000, and Campins called.

Both players checked the 3 river and Arthur showed 98 for a missed straight draw. Campins turned over QQ to win the pot.

At the same time at the next table over, Brandon Estrada had bet 3,000 from the small blind on a flop of J78 and Kiarash Hamadani called in the cutoff. Gerard Cassis then moved all in for 8,000 on the button.

Estrada asked the dealer if he could raise again before making it 13,000. Hamadani called and they went to the J turn. Estrada then moved all in for 29,000 and Hamadani folded.

Estrada showed KJ for trips, but Cassis had 77 for a full house. The river was the 2 and Cassis tripled up, while Estrada took the side pot.

Held Raises Yaroshevskyy

Level 3 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante

Konstantin Held made it 1,000 to go in the cutoff. Igor Yaroshevskyy called in the cutoff, and a 2J6 flop was fanned. Both players checked to the Q turn, where Yaroshevskyy bet 700.

Held raised to 2,800, which won him the pot as Yaroshevskyy folded after some moments in thought.

Level 3 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante

Three ways to the 1074 flop, James Wicker in the big blind bet 5,000 into 2,600. Nicholas Wang on the button was the only caller and they checked the 2 on the turn. Wicker bet another 15,000 on the A river and Wang reluctantly paid it off to get shown the 77 for a set by Wicker.

Rivered Flush Shows Slanina the Exit

Level 3 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante

Action was joined with a full board showing KA5QJ and 20,800 already in the middle.

Big blind Michal Slanina, flicked out two red chips, good for a bet of 10,000. Action was then on Pejman Niyati, who had entered the pot from early position. He elected to move all in for 49,500, which covered his opponent's stack.

Slanina made a quick decision, moving the rest of his chips into the middle to signify a call.

It was bad news for Slanina, as he showed his 55 for a flopped set. This was no good, though, as Niyati had rivered a flush with 107, sending his opponent to the rail.
