Mark Kroon Tops Day 2c Field at 2013 WSOP Main Event; Hellmuth & Ivey Advance
The 2013 World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event continued on Wednesday as the 2,306 remaining players from the Day 1c flight returned for five more two-hour levels of play. By the end of that time, just 953 players remained with Mark “P0ker H0” Kroon and his stack of 507,300 leading the way.
Kroon actually finished as the chip leader after all three Day 1 starting flights and kept the honor after three Day 2s. A Madison, Wisconsin native, Kroon was the inaugural player featured in our popular series My First in which he revealed the origins of his “P0ker H0” nickname.
Others who thrived on Day 2c were Victor Figueroa (460,600), William Reymond (405,000), Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi (394,600), Ryan Olson (364,700) and Peter Kamaras (354,400).

Kroon grabbed the overall chip lead on the last hand of Day 1c, and he picked up right where he left off on Day 2c. In Level 5 (250/500/50), Kroon led out from under the gun for 2,525 on a flop of K♣6♠5♣ and a player in middle position called. The player in the cutoff then reraised to 6,000, both Kroon and the middle-position player called and the 4♥ turned. Kroon led for 10,025, both his opponents called and the 6♦ completed the board on the river. Kroon continued for 10,575 and only the middle-position called. "King," the middle-position player said only to have Kroon roll over the 9♣6♣ for rivered trips.
"I had a flush draw, a pair and I am the chip leader. I am supposed to hit that," Kroon said after the hand. Later on in the evening, in Level 10 (600/1,200/200) to be exact, a player raised to 2,800 and Kroon called from the big blind. The dealer spread J♥6♥6♣ on the flop, both players checked and the 3♦ turned. The preflop raiser bet 3,500, Kroon called and the both players quickly checked the meaningless river. Kroon tabled the A♠10♠ and his opponent mucked. With that small pot, Kroon brought his stack up to 530,000, though it'd dip just a bit before night's end.
One man who didn't fair quite so well was 2006 WSOP Main Event champ Jamie Gold, who fell in Level 9 (500/1,000/100). Following a preflop raise, a call from the button and one from Gregory Liang in the small blind, Gold three-bet an additional 10,000 from the big. The original raiser folded and the button called before Liang made a four-bet for an additional 15,000. Gold smooth-called, as did the button to see a J♣J♠10♦ flop. The action was checked round to see the Q♥ land on the turn and Liang move all in for over 50,000.
"I don't think I can fold!" announced Gold as he stood up. "No way I can fold this hand!" Gold then slid in his final 40,000 as the button player open-folded AxKx.

"F**k me!" Gold screamed repeatedly. Even though Gold was drawing dead, the inconsequential A♠ was put out on the river before he took his leave. Likewise, the man who won the Main Event the year before Gold, Joe Hachem, failed to make it through Day 2c.
Others notables who fell on Wednesday included online stars David “Doc” Sands, Brian Hastings and Tom “durrrr” Dwan; the 2007 WSOP Main Event last woman standing Maria Ho; 2010 WSOP Player of the Year Frank Kassela; Joe Serock, who spent the night before in jail after wrecking his moped; two-time bracelet winner Vanessa Selbst; high-stakes cash game player Jen Harman; soccer star Gerard Piqué; NHL star Roberto Loungo; WSOP APAC Main Event champ Daniel Negreanu; famed statistician Nate Silver; 2013 WSOP bracelet winners Matt Perrins, Matt Waxman and John Beauprez; Team PokerStars Pros Jason Mercier, Randy Lew and Julien Brécard; and 2010 third-place finisher Joseph Cheong, who has spent a total of 22 days playing in the WSOP Main Event in the past four years.
While many fell there are still a bevy of big-names that advanced to Day 3 including former Survivor contestant Jean-Robert Bellande (320,900); past Main Event champs Carlos Mortensen (295,500), Johnny Chan (169,000), Tom McEvoy (82,500) and Phil Hellmuth (49,000); Team PokerStars Pros Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (245,600), Theo Jorgensen (187,900), Jake Cody (160,000), Isaac Haxton (106,000), Humberto Brenes (66,100) and Angel Guillen (50,300); 2012 Octo-Niners Rob Salaburu (180,300) and Jeremy Ausmus (38,600); nine-time bracelet winner Phil Ivey (198,800); and Black Friday defendant Chad Elie, who recently joined PokerNews for an exclusive interview to talk about payment processing and his time in jail.
The 953 Day 2c survivors will join the survivors from Day 2a/b (1,743 total players) for Day 3 action on Thursday at 12 p.m. local time. It’ll mark the first time the Main Event field will be under the same roof and playing at the same time.
