Moran Leaking Chips

Moran in healthier times
Moran in healthier times
Shane Moran has been leaking chips of late and now sits on 3,100. In the first confrontation he ran into an opponent's {K-Spades}{K-Hearts} on a board reading {9-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and mucked his hand.

The second loss was at the hands of Sorel Mizzi when he bluffed the river and mucked when Mizzi eventually made the call.

Two Pair No Good

Flopping two pair turned into a setback for Daniel Neilson. With the board showing {A-Clubs} {5-Diamonds} {8-Clubs}, Neilson checked and then raised to 3,000 after his opponent, Manuel Hansimikali, opened for 1,500. Hansimikali then moved in for 13,000 and Neilson made the call, showing {A-Spades} {5-Spades}. He was up against the nut flush draw, {K-Clubs} {Q-Clubs}, which missed on the turn {9-Spades} but filled on the river {3-Clubs}. As a result, Neilson moved backwards in the counts to 30,000.

Best Mates to Table Mates

Kelvin Beattie opened to 900 from middle position and found a caller in [Removed:91] from the small blind.

On a flop of {4-Clubs}{9-Spades}{2-Hearts} Arsenis led for 1,400 and Beattie called. The turn fell the {8-Clubs} and Arsenis led for 3,400, putting Beattie into the tank before he moved all in for around 20,000. Arsenis mucked, and Beattie tabled {A-Clubs}{10-Spades} for a bluff.

While Beattie raked in the pot sending him to 29,000, great mate James Broom took a seat on his immediate left. Traveling and playing the tournament circuit now has new meaning as both will be squaring off for the remainder of the day.

Tony G Doubles Through Benson

PokerNews chairman Tony G is hard at work today, trying to make a good Day 1 showing to position himself for a deep run in the Aussie Millions Main Event. He just did himself a huge favor by trading chip positions with Gary Benson. The chips were already in the middle by the time we got to the table. Tony G tabled {K-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}, which had out-flopped Benson's {A-Spades} {A-?} on a board of {K-Diamonds} {2-Hearts} {Q-Spades}. The turn and river were safe cards for Tony, coming {7-Spades} and {5-Spades}. He doubled up to 60,000 while Benson came back to the pack at 30,000.

Youssef Eliminated

David Saab's table was broken about 15 minutes ago. The native son landed at Sam Youssef's table. It was a good move for Saab. After a player in middle position opened for 1,000 and Youssef reraised from small blind to 3,000, Saab elected to call out of the big blind. The original raiser called as well.

Each player checked a flop that came down {2-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} {K-Clubs}. With all the preflop money, it felt like someone was being a bit "dishonest." The {3-Hearts} on the turn shook things out. Youssef and Saab both checked to the third player, who fired out for 5,000. Youssef called, then watched as Saab check-raised to 17,000. That was enough to put Youssef all in; he called after the other player folded.

Saab: {K-Hearts} {K-Diamonds}
Youssef: {A-Hearts} {A-Diamonds}

Saab's showed the nuts, a set of kings. He had to dodge only two cards in the deck, the other two aces, and did so successfully when the river bricked out a {6-?}. He's up to 57,000 chips now, while Youssef is on the rail. The third player from the hand, who remains in the tournament, said he folded pocket queens.

Michael Pesek Crippled Then Eliminated

Michael Pesek has been crippled, then eliminated from the Main Event.

In the hand that crippled him, Pesek opened on a flop of {7-Clubs}{8-Spades}{10-Spades} from middle position for 1,600 and was raised to 4,000 by the big blind. Pesek responded by sliding his entire circa 18,000-chips stack into the middle, which his opponent snap-called for 700 less.

Pesek's top set {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} was in front of his opponent's {2-Spades}{4-Spades}, until the river brought the {6-Spades} which left Pesek on only 700 chips.

He then got into a battle of the blinds with his tiny stack, pushing all in with {6-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and having the big blind call with {j-Clubs}{7-Spades}. The board was no help to Pesek and he'll have to wait till 2010 to chase the Aussie Millions Main Event bracelet.

Maybe Try Smiling and Giving Them a Vegemite Sandwich

Being in a strange land without fluently speaking the native tongue can be an ordeal for even the most seasoned travelers. Add to that the pressure of playing in the largest poker tournament in the Southern Hemisphere, and a sane man might crack.

Even worse, we imagine, would be a table draw with some very chatty native-language speakers. Such was the case for two representatives of Casino Paf today. Casino Paf, it seems, is a small Scandinavian casino chain that is based out of Finland and also has operations in Sweden and Estonia. Two Finnish players who were representatives of Casino Paf were in today's starting field. They drew starting seat assignments next to Brian McFadden and David Saab, probably two of the chattiest players in the room.

Nothing like adding an English lesson on top of your poker vacation!
