Obrestad Starts the Long Climb Back

Annette Obrestad
Annette Obrestad
Annette Obrestad was in second chip position at the start of the day and has slowly sunk back to the pack as play has progressed. She was the beneficiary of a five-way pot a few moments ago. With 40,000 chips in the middle, the flop came down {A-Spades} {6-Diamonds} {2-Diamonds}. Action checked to Nhan Le, who made an exploratory bet of 13,000. That folded all players except Obrestad.

The turn came down {9-Spades}. Obrestad mixed things up by leading into Le on that seemingly harmless card for 27,000 chips. Le tanked, then made the call. The river was the {5-Clubs} and produced a bet of 70,500 from Obrestad. Le couldn't call again, choosing instead to fold his hand.

Free Falling

Tom Pongrass
Tom Pongrass
Tom Pongrass was moved to a new table roughly 15 minutes ago. He probably wishes it had never happened. Since the move, Pongrass has doubled up three players. The latest beneficiary is Raymond Rahme. Pongrass bet 20,000 after the dealer spread a flop of {5-Spades} {3-Diamonds} {K-Clubs}. Rahme, in position, made the call.

The turn was the {A-Diamonds}. Pongrass quickly checked it to Rahme, who led out for 38,000. Pongrass called to a river card of {6-Clubs} and checked again. Rahme, with 81,500 left in his stack, moved all in. Pongrass made the call, then shook his head in disbelief when Rahme showed {6-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} for a rivered set of sixes.

Pongrass is down to 220,000 after having more than half a million chips a shot while ago.

Docherty's House is Full

David Docherty
David Docherty
As we mentioned earlier, now that the super-short stacks have mostly flamed out of the tournament, the players have an average stack of 70 big blinds. That gives them some room for post-flop play. It was on the turn that we came to the table of David Docherty and Annica Ivert. The board showed {J-Spades} {8-Spades} {A-Spades} {4-Hearts}. After Ivert checked, Docherty reached for chips and made the price to see the river 33,500. Ivert made the call.

The river was a repeater -- the {8-Diamonds}. Ivert again checked. This time Docherty grabbed 65,000 chips and pushed them into the middle. Ivert took her time making her decision but did ultimately call. Docherty turned over {J-Clubs} {J-Hearts} for jacks full of eights. There were only two hands that could beat him. Ivert didn't have either.

Docherty continues to hang around. He's got 348,000 while Ivert, who came into the day with more than half a million chips and the chip lead, is down to 360,000.

Cassidy Backs Into Two Pair

Joe Cassidy has a poker angel looking over his shoulder. He checked a flop of {5-Spades} {6-Diamonds} {3-Diamonds} to Tom Pongrass, who opened for 20,000. Cassidy then raised all in to approximately 100,000 and was quickly called.

Pongrass: {6-Hearts} {3-Hearts}
Cassidy: {K-Hearts} {7-Diamonds}

Cassidy showed down two overcards and a gutshot draw against Pongrass' top and bottom pair. The turn {K-Clubs} gave Cassidy a pair of kings and some hope; he staved off elimination by making a board pair with the {5-Diamonds} river to make kings and fives, better then Pongrass' sixes and fives.

Pongrass would have had an impressive stack if he had won the hand. Instead he's down to 385,000 and Cassidy is still alive with 264,000.

Kim Makes Good on His Set

The pot was contested between the blinds: Nhan Le in the small blind, and Kelly Kim in the big blind. All of Kim's chips were in by the turn, with Le making the call. Kim showed {7-Hearts} {7-Diamonds}, which matched nicely with a board of {7-Spades} {5-Hearts} {3-Diamonds} {8-Clubs}. Le was drawing at two queens, and only two queens, after showing down {Q-Clubs} {Q-Hearts}. The river blanked out the {10-Spades}, giving 200,000 chips to Kim.

What About Patrik?

Patrik Antonius
Patrik Antonius
Patrik Antonius has been very, very quiet at the feature table today. Ordinarily Antonius lets his play speak for him, but he hasn't been able to muster much. We finally saw him in a hand on the turn against Francis Ellis. The board showed {A-Diamonds} {2-Spades} {10-Spades} {4-Clubs} and Ellis checked it over to Antonius, who opted to bet 30,000. Ellis made the call.

The river fell {6-Clubs}. Again Ellis checked to Antonius, and again Antonius bet. He fired out 55,000 chips. Ellis went into the tank for several minutes before calling with {Q-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}. Antonius tapped the table and mucked without showing.

That's the way it's gone for Antonius all day. He's down to 215,000 chips. Ellis moved up to 235,000.

John Dalessandri Eliminated in 49th Place (AU$15,000)

John Dalessandri - 49th place
John Dalessandri - 49th place
John Dalessandri has been eliminated by Annette Obrestad.

Dalessandri moved his final 47,000 chips into the pot over a preflop raise of 8,000 by Annette Obrestad. Dalessandri tabled {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs} and would need help against Obrestad's {Q-Spades}{q-Hearts}. It didn't arrive with the {j-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{10-Diamonds} board, sending him to the rail in 49th place.

With the elimination of Dalessandri we now move up a level in the payout scale. Players eliminated from now on are guaranteed AU$20,000 for their efforts.

Trivia Answer

Ok, so we admit, the trivia question was a bit of a trick question (don't blame me; I didn't come up with the question). After Troy Tsagaris was eliminated in 82nd place at the 2008 Aussie Millions Main Event, the tournament went into "bubble mode," with each table playing hand-for-hand. Roughly half an hour later, two players moved all in on separate tables at the same time. Both players lost the hand and were therefore deemed to be simultaneously eliminated. Thus the answer that we were going for was:

Charles Cuschieri and Lucio Baroni

Who were simultaneous bubble boys and thus chopped 80th-place prize money. They still showed a net loss for the tournament, but it was better than a kick in the head.

The first person to post the answer in the Shout Box was David Docherty supporter "PFUsqrl." We will be contacting PFUsqrl later in the day to arrange enrollment in the satellite qualifier.

There's one more satellite seat up for grabs. We'll post a second trivia question to the blog later in the day, and we promise -- the answer will be much more straightforward.

David Paewai Double Doubles

David Paewai has doubled through Zac Fellows. Fellows opened preflop to 11,000 and Paewai moved all in over the top for 44,500. Fellows called with {J-Spades}{j-Clubs} and Paewai was going to need a fair bit of help with his {A-Spades}{4-Clubs}.

The {5-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} gave him a glimmer of hope, but the {j-Diamonds} on the turn left him drawing to a three to make a straight. Already beginning to head to the rail, that help arrived with the {3-Spades} on the river doubling him up.

A short time later, Paewai moved all in with {k-Hearts}{k-Spades} and got a call from Tino Lechich with {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}. The board ran out {j-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{3-Hearts}, doubling him once again.

Paewai has gone from 44,500 to 190,000 in just a few hands, much to the delight of his vocal fan base on the rail.
