Kitty Kuo Bags Huge Lead in Aussie Millions $25,000 Challenge

Level 12 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Kitty Kuo
Kitty Kuo

After 12 levels it is Kitty Kuo who holds a commanding lead heading into Day 2 of the Aussie Millions $25,000 Challenge. Just 19 players remain in the first big High Roller of the festival, and Kuo holds a lead of just under 200,000 over her nearest rival.

Helped by some late eliminations, Kuo bagged 754,000 when play finished for the night shortly before 2 am. She sent Robert Spano to the rail in one of the last hands to soar ahead of rivals Mustapha Kanit (582,000), Rory Young (400,000) and Jan-Eric Schwippert (360,500).

"It was a good day," said Kuo, "A very fun day!"

Kuo had posted on social media throughout the day that her seating draw hadn't been the kindest it could have been. Her first table saw her pitted against two-time WSOP final tablist Antoine Saout, 2017 WCOOP winner Steven van Zadelhoff and former Aussie Millions runner-up Jack Salter.

"I've played with all these men eight years! I know how they play!" said Kuo. "This is my fifth time in Melbourne. It's my favourite. The food is great and the city is nice. And Australian men are handsome!"

Aussie Millions $25,000 Challenge

A field of 114 players came together for the 2018 Aussie Millions $25,000 Challenge. It was a short day for the likes of Sam Grafton and Niall Farrell who were both eliminated in the early goings, with Grafton sent to the rail on the very first hand after losing Ace-King against the Aces of Marc MacDonnell.

As is to be expected in Melbourne, the Australian contingent was out in force, with Martin Kozlov, Jonathan Karamalikis, Rory Young, Corey Kempson, and Kahle Burns all participating.

Michael Addamo, Marius Gierse and Kitty Kuo were among the early players to head over six figures, but as the day progressed the chips swung wildly between players as they got to grips with the 6-Max format.

Other notable players to bust before the dinner break included Max Silver, Ludovic Geilich, Christian Harder, Vojtech Ruzicka, Manig Loeser, Benny Spindler and Dominykas Karmazinas.

By the time players came back from dinner break, they had been joined by superstar Fedor Holz, who lasted all of 20 minutes before he flopped a set with pocket Aces, only for opponent Roger Teska to river a straight and send Holz to the rail. We will have to wait and see whether he plays in any more events here in Melbourne.

The payouts were also confirmed today, with 14 places being paid and a min-cash worth A$54,720. First place is A$738,720 and the ANTON Jewellery championship ring.

Michael Gathy

As the evening progressed Rory Young and Jan-Eric Schwippert moved over 300,000, but it was Michael Gathy (pictured) who burst over the 400,000 mark after eliminating Ben Heath. Heath had lost house over house in the first level of the day to bust his first bullet and had been going well before running his Kings into the Aces of Gathy. The Belgian's monster pocket pair held and sent the 2017 Aussie Millions runner-up to the rail.

However, as the last level ticked down to the eventual close of play, it was Kitty Kuo who headed the counts. Kuo sent Preben Stokkan to the rail and was sitting comfortably on a stack in excess of 500,000 as play came to a close.

The players will resume tomorrow at 2 pm local time. Stay tuned to PokerNews for continuing live updates from the Crown Casino in Melbourne, and the 2018 Aussie Millions.

Kahle Burns
Kahle Burns

Kahle Burns was already missing from the table and Claas Segebrecht confirmed that he ran with pocket queens into the pocket kings of Kitty Kuo. The latter was also responsible for the next casualty after when raising on the button and calling the shove of short stack Preben Stokkan in the big blind.

Preben Stokkan: {Q-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Kitty Kuo: {A-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

The board of {A-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades} didn't bring sufficient help for Stokkan and the Norwegian was eliminated half an hour before the end of Day 1.

Michael Gathy

Claas Segebrecht raised to 6,000 from under the gun. Ben Heath three-bet to 19,000 on the button. Michael Gathy then four-bet to 47,000 from the small blind. Segebrecht folded and with the action back on Heath he five-bet all in for around 150,000. Gathy snap-called.

Michael Gathy: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
Ben Heath: {k-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

The board ran out {8-Spades}{5-Hearts}{2-Spades}{9-Clubs}{3-Spades} and Gathy moved into the chip lead with well over 400,000 in chips.

Zhang Left Short; Hallaert Eliminated

Level 10 : 1,200/2,400, 400 ante
Kenny Hallaert

Alex Foxen raised to 5,500 and Chi Zhang shoved from one seat over on the button. Foxen called and put himself at risk for around 45,000.

Alex Foxen: {A-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}
Chi Zhang: {3-Spades}{3-Clubs}

The board came {K-Spades}{5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{A-Diamonds} and Foxen rivered the ace to improve to a better full house.

Soon after, Kazuhiko Yotsushika raised to 7,000 and Foxen called. Kenny Hallaert announced all in from the small blind for 77,500 and Yotsushika reraised all in. Foxen asked for a brief count on Hallaert's jam and released his cards into the muck.

Kenny Hallaert: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}
Kazuhiko Yotsushika: {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}

The flip went to the Japanese on a board of {Q-Spades}{J-Spades}{5-Clubs}{6-Clubs}{8-Hearts} and Hallaert was gone. "Nice hand. This table has been good to you," Jordan Westmorland said from one seat over.

Higgs Scores Huge Double

Level 9 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Sam Higgs
Sam Higgs

In a three-bet pot and 30,000 in the middle already, Jonathan Karamalikis checked to Sam Higgs who bet 20,000.

Higgs had 80,000 behind and Karamalikis check-raised all in and Higgs called.

Sam Higgs: {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Jonathan Karamalikis: {a-Clubs}{a-Hearts}

Karamalikis had a stranglehold on the hand, but the turn brought the {q-Hearts} giving Higgs a set. The river was the {4-Spades} and Higgs doubled up.

"It is a Brutal Game"

Level 7 : 600/1,200, 100 ante
Vojtech Ruzicka
Vojtech Ruzicka

Within two hands, the stack of Vojtech Ruzicka has been reduced to zero and the Czech left the table with the words "it is a brutal game." According to Danny Tang, he raised and one player called. Ruzicka three-bet and Tang four-bet shoved with {K-}{Q-} to get there against the {A-}{K-} of Ruzicka.

Then, Sam Higgs four-bet shoved into Ruzicka to see the former November Niner call with the {J-Spades}{J-Diamonds}. Higgs only had the {A-Diamonds}{4-Clubs} but the board came {3-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{K-Spades}{A-Clubs} to improve Higgs to aces and treys.

Burns Shoots to the Top

Level 7 : 600/1,200, 100 ante
Kahle Burns
Kahle Burns

Winfred Yu lost a flip with pocket threes against the ace-nine of Jack Salter after the latter paired the nine on the flop and an ace on the turn.

Soon after it would be Salter who joined the rail as well, and Manig Loeser busted on his second bullet as well.

Salter opened the action with a raise to 3,000 in the cutoff and big stack Kahle Burns three-bet out of the small blind to 11,200. Salter four-bet to 23,000 and, once Burns had five-bet to 125,000, the Brit called all in for around 75,000.

Jack Salter: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Spades}
Kahle Burns: {A-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}

The board came {K-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{K-Clubs}{K-Diamonds} and that was it for Salter, at least for now.

Zhang Doubles Through Harder; Zinkevich Through Solomos

Level 6 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Top Set no good for Nick Solomos
Top Set no good for Nick Solomos

Chi Zhang was spotted all in and at risk for 18,700 on the heads-up turn of {10-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} and tabled {K-Clubs}{10-Clubs} for top pair. Christian Harder had {10-Spades}{3-Spades} for top pair with a weaker kicker and the {5-Hearts} river brought no upset.

Yury Zinkevich doubled as well after the action escalated on the three-way turn of {Q-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}. With some 28,000 in the middle, Nick Solomos moved all in for 57,700 and Zinkevich called all in for 25,500. Preben Stokkan asked for a count on Solomos but folded eventually.

Yury Zinkevich: {10-Hearts}{9-Hearts}
Nick Solomos: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}

The {5-Hearts} river bricked and Solomos had to forfeit a big portion of his stack.

No Chance for Kornuth on First Bullet

Level 5 : 400/800, 100 ante
Chance Kornuth
Chance Kornuth

Jonathan Karamalikis raised to 2,000 and picked up one caller before Chance Kornuth three-bet to 7,000. Only Karamalikis called and the flop fell {Q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{2-Clubs}. Kornuth checked and called a bet of 6,800 by Karamalikis before checking again the {6-Spades} turn. Karamalikis made it 13,000 to go and Kornuth check-raised all in for 35,000.

Karamalikis called in a heart beat and Kornuth tabled his {K-Diamonds}{J-Spades} only to find himself drawing dead, as Karamalikis had flopped the nut flush with {A-Clubs}{5-Clubs}. By the time the meaningless {A-Hearts} appeared on the river, Kornuth had already disappeared from his seat and will very likely re-enter soon.

Jack Sinclair on "Outrageously Friendly" Melbourne and the Excitement of the Aussie Millions

Level 2 : 100/200, 25 ante
Jack Sinclair
Jack Sinclair

2017 was a breakout year for Jack Sinclair; finishing eighth in the WSOP Main Event, and following it up by winning the €25,000 German Poker Championships Super High Roller.

And after a deep run in the PCA, Sinclair is now in Melbourne for his first taste of the Aussie Millions.

"2018 has started well for me," said Sinclair. "PCA was a lot of fun, and having already cashed in my first event here at the Aussie Millions is very encouraging!"

"Melbourne is a great place to be, especially in January, as it is usually pretty depressing in Europe right around now. The people here are outrageously friendly, being a Brit it is was initially a little disconcerting having so many strangers talk to me, but I am getting used to it. "

Sinclair said that everyone he had asked said that the Aussie Millions is one of their favourite stops on the tour, and it was one that he himself was excited for.

"The actual poker here is incredible, not like anywhere else. It seems like Australia has been isolated from the rest of the poker world for some time, they have a lot of crazy rules, and the Aussies play a very unconventional style. At the same time, it feels a lot like Vegas in the summer, which may possibly be due to the heat, but there is a real sense of excitement & grandeur surrounding the series."

And what does the future hold for the Brit after such a successful 2017?

"My short, medium & long term goal is always the same: trophies. I don't set financial goals for poker, and if I do they are very modest. I just want to make enough to keep playing. My only concern is getting better... and winning trophies for the glory!"
