The European Poker Tour’s last visit to Malta saw Aliaksei Boika claim the 2016 EPT Malta Main Event title.
After six long days of poker, the then 28-year old Belarusian poker pro bested long-time tournament chip leader Mats Karlsson heads-up, making one of the best calls in EPT history to win it all.
The final day started with just six of the 468 runners remaining. Boika started the final table as the short stack, but quickly moved up the pack and took home the top prize of €355,700 from the €2,269,800 prize pool.

Heads-up to the 3♣6♠K♠ flop, David Kaufmann added a bet of 70,000 to the pot of 320,000 from the big blind. Thomas Muehloecker called on the button, and did so too when Kaufmann slid in 125,000 on the Q♥ turn.
The 9♣ river saw Kaufmann jam all in for 205,000, and again Muehloecker quickly called. Kaufmann tabled A♦K♦ for top pair, outkicking the K♣8♣ of Muehloecker to take down the pot and double up.
James Jagger got his 475,000 chips in from the big blind against Barny Boatman in the cutoff and was at risk.
James Jagger: K♠Q♦
Barny Boatman: A♥A♦
"Never easy," Boatman stated as Jagger flopped a pair on K♦2♠6♣. The rest of the 10♣10♥ runout was safe for Boatman, however, and he resultingly knocked out his fellow Englishman.
Day 3 will conclude after Level 29 or when the field is reduced to six players, whichever comes first.
If play runs the full distance, action is expected to wrap up around 8 p.m. local time, with no dinner break currently scheduled.
Joachim Haraldstad opened to 50,000 from middle position before Kumar Ghosh made it 190,000 from the hijack., Haraldstad four-bet to 350,000 and snap-called as the slightly bigger stack when Ghosh jammed for 755,000.
Kumar Ghosh: A♣K♥
Joachim Haraldstad: A♥A♦
Haraldstad made a boat on the A♠7♣7♠ flop, and took in the spoils after the board completed with the Q♦5♣.
Tom Fuchs got his stack of 345,000 in from the hijack, being looked up by Mateusz Moolhuizen in the cutoff.
Tom Fuchs: A♥A♦
Mateusz Moolhuizen: 10♥10♦
Moolhuizen needed running quads after the 4♥3♥A♠ flop, but his miracle runout did not come as the dealer put 5♦9♠ on the table instead.
Fuchs doubled up, putting a slight dent in Moolhuizen's stack.
Matas Cimbolas raised to 55,000 in the hijack. Boris Kolev sat in the small blind and upped the ante to 195,000 before Cimbolas moved all in. Kolev quickly called off, putting his stack of 800,000 at risk.
Boris Kolev: J♥J♣
Matas Cimbolas: A♦K♠
Cimbolas paired his ace on the A♣5♠3♦8♥8♣ board, awarding him the pot and knocking Kolev out.
