Hughes Bops Della Volpe

Level 10 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 1,000 ante
Daniel Hughes
Daniel Hughes

Daniel Hughes opened from early position before Thomas Della Volpe shoved for his remaining 22,500 from the small blind. Hughes called and put Della Volpe at risk.

Thomas Della Volpe: A♥Q♣All in
Daniel Hughes: K♥9♥

Della Volpe was slightly ahead preflop, but the flop was all Hughes when it came 5♥9♣2♥, giving him top pair and a flush draw to boot.

The K♦ turn shut the door on any hopes for Della Volpe, as he had no recourse to win as they went to the final card.

Hughes sealed it officially on the 10♥ river as Della Volpe was sent to the rail.

Della Volpe bought back into the tournament to start with a fresh stack.

Ducks Fly High for Powers

Level 9 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,000 ante
Lisa Powers
Lisa Powers

Antonio Ndoja began the bidding with a raise to 4,000 from the cutoff. Lisa Powers called on the button. Ruslan Zakharchuk wanted to play for more and opted to three-bet to 11,000 from the small blind. Both Ndoja and Powers called.

The 9♠2♠7♥ flop led to a bet of 6,000 from Zakharchuk. Ndoja folded, but Powers made the call.

Zakharchuk shoved for 20,500 on the 10♦ turn. Powers snap-called and put herself at risk for 14,000.

Lisa Powers: 2♣2♥All in
Ruslan Zakharchuk: A♣A♦

Zakharchuk held the best starting hand in the game, but he found out the bad news that the flop hit Powers in a big way when she revealed a set of deuces.

The 7♣ river did not bring the ace, and Zakharchuk took a big hit.

Della Volpe Cracks Queens

Level 9 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,000 ante
Thomas Della Volpe
Thomas Della Volpe

Lisa Powers clashed with Thomas Della Volpe preflop as Volpe was all-in and at risk for 17,000 against Powers.

Thomas Della Volpe: A♦7♦All in
Lisa Powers: Q♥Q♣

Della Volpe was searching for an ace, but the flop gave Powers a queen instead when it came 5♠8♦Q♦, giving her top set. The set came with a caveat as Della Volpe gained a flush draw to stay in the hunt.

The 6♠ turn was safe for Powers, but it once again came with the drawback of upgrading Della Volpe to an open-ended straight draw to go with his flush draw.

Della Volpe would get there on the 4♣ river, awarding him the pot after escaping elimination against pocket queens.

Antonio Ndoja
Antonio Ndoja

Antonio Ndoja has built up the biggest stack in the room thus far on Day 1a, and this hand continued his strong performance.

Heather Alcorn got the action started with an open to 3,500 from early position. Antonio Ndoja called from the cutoff before Daniel Hughes joined with a call from the small blind.

The 9♦4♣3♥ flop was checked by both Hughes and Alcorn before Ndoja fired 4,000. Hughes called, but Alcorn folded.

Both players checked the 5♣ turn, ushering in the 8♦ river. Hughes checked again, but Ndoja was not in the checking mood, as he bet 12,000 on the river. Hughes did not think long before he folded and yielded the pot to Ndoja on the river.

Daniel Hughes has gone in the right direction thus far on Day 1a, and a couple of wins have only helped his prospects.

The first hand took place when Lisa Powers opened to 2,500 from middle position. Hughes responded with a three-bet to 7,500 from the hijack. Powers called.

The A♣10♥8♦ flop resulted in a check from Powers. Hughes continued for 2,500 and was called.

Both players checked the 2♣ turn to bring the Q♣ river. Powers checked for a third time before Hughes fired 15,000. Powers was no longer interested and made the fold.

Hughes showed Q♥Q♦ for a rivered set of queens.

Hughes was back at it again when Powers opened to 3,000 from early position and was called by Hughes from the next seat over. Anthony Carbone chose to three-bet to 11,000 from the hijack in response. Powers folded, but Hughes was not done and made the call.

The 3♥A♥4♠ flop was checked by Hughes. Carbone continued for 12,000, but Hughes responded with a check-raise to 25,000. Carbone opted to yield the pot with a fold as Hughes dragged in the chips.

Quinten Melius
Quinten Melius

Quinten Melius opened to 3,000 from early position. Alexander Zelinko called from middle position. James Kennedy joined from the hijack, and Odeh Wahdan also called from the cutoff.

The 3♠Q♣10♠ flop led to a contiuation bet of 5,000 from Melius. Only Zelinko called.

Melius fired 10,000 on the 7♦ river. Zelinko jammed over the top in response. Melius called and put himself at risk for 34,100.

Quinten Melius: K♠Q♠All in
Alexander Zelinko: 3♦3♥

Melius was behind despite holding top pair, as Zelinko flopped a set. Melius was not down and out, however, as he also had a flush draw going into the river.

The 5♠ river would make Melius glad he had the flush draw as a backup plan, as he improved to a flush to score the double.
