Landon Tice PokerGO Cup

The poker gods sure love to giveth and then taketh away. Or, at least they did to Landon Tice on Monday during the $3,000 PokerGO Cup Showcase at the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas.

Dubbed the "Child of the Sim" by Joey Ingram, Tice was on the winning end of a set over set situation early during the Day 1b session. But he'd lose more than half of the big stack he accumulated an hour later in another set over set confrontation.

Tice Scores Early Knockout With Set Over Set

The first confrontation took place in one of the first hands of the day in the second and final starting flight of the Showcase event, an event that PokerNews is live reporting.

In a heads-up pot against between Tice and old school player Doug Lee on a board of 38AJ7, Lee bet 15,000 and Tice raised all in for the rest of his stack of 125,000. Lee went in the tank and eventually called.

Tice showed AA for top set as Lee rolled over a worse flopped set with 33.

"You couldn't find a big fold?" table mate Jeremy Becker asked before being chided by David Coleman.

"Nice timing," said Coleman. "Some people have no class."

Around an hour later, Tice was involved in yet another set over set confrontation, but he was on the wrong end of things this time around.

Justin Vaysman doubled up through Tice holding 88 against the 55 of Tice as chips got in on the river. The board had already been washed, but it showed an eight and a five on the flop.

A few levels later and Tice was out of the tournament. The field had grown to 189 players as of publishing, more than tripling the opening flight's field of 54 players. Eight players bagged that flight with qualifier Adam Bonilla leading the way.

Tice, a pro from Florida, burst onto the poker scene in his early 20s during the pandemic. He was considered to be a young prodigy by pros such as Ingram and Matt Berkey, destined for poker greatness. The "Child of the Sim" has lived up to the hype, with $3.9 million in The Hendon Mob cashes. He was a co-host on the Only Friends podcast before Berkey canceled the popular poker show last year.
