After nine levels of 60 minutes, Day 1a of the €4,300 Main Event of the Master Classics of Poker finished with 101 players making it through to Day 2 out of 258 entries. The 2019 edition has changed the structure a bit and Day 1a was the only starting flight that featured the full 60-minute levels. Compared to the 75 entries Day 1a attracted in 2018, today’s field crushed those attendance numbers. In 2018, the Main Event pulled in 293 entries and this year’s edition is well on course to surpass those numbers.

Claiming the Day 1a chip lead is Shyngis Satubayev from Kazakhstan with 260,200 in chips. He is followed by Andrea Ricci (191,500), Jesse Liljegren (182,000), Paraskevas Tsokaridis (166,000), and Tommie Janssen with 161,000.

Liljegren was responsible for the elimination of Ryan Riess when the latter pushed his last few chips in after Liljegren had raised. Riess held ace-ten but Liljegren was ahead with the rockets. Riess did pick up a Broadway draw on the turn but bricked the river to be sent home for today.

In a field that can be considered one of the toughest for a tournament with this buy-in, the majority consisted out of Dutch players. Janssen ended highest to represent the Dutchies and he is followed by David Hu, Sebastiaan de Jonge, Denzel Spekman, and Floyd Rosner. The defending champion, Alberto Stegeman is also still in the running to try and retain his title.

But the Master Classics of Poker always attracts the crème-de-la-crème of the poker world to Holland Casino Amsterdam. And this year is no different. Foreign players like Hossein Ensan, Paul Dando, Danilo Velasevic, Bart Lybaert, Gary Hasson, Sonny Franco, Igor Yaroshevskyy, Jan Bednar, Johan Storakers, Paul Tedeschi, Ole Schemion, and many more all found a bag for Day 2.

Unfortunately, not everyone was lucky enough to win their all-ins today. Paul Hoefer lost his last chips just before the end of the day as did Fari Chati. And they weren’t the only ones, Tobias Peters, Luuk Gieles, Fabio Sperling, Bryan Paris, Steve O’Dwyer, Claas Segebrecht, Michal Mrakes, Javier Zarco, Ioannis Angelou-Konstas, Niklas Astedt, and Juha Helppi for example will all need to try again on Day 1b.

Day 1b will take place on Thursday, November 28, at 12:30 p.m. local time. Nine levels of 20 minutes each are scheduled as this is the turbo version of the starting flight. Players who bust can reenter once during Day 1b or before the start of Day 2 at 7 p.m. local time.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be there from the start of Day 1b until the remaining players bag up their chips for a few hours, so stick around to see who else will make it through to Day 2!

Firoz Mangroe

Firoz Mangroe raised to 2,200 from the cutoff and Paul Hoefer shoved on the button for his last 4,500. Mathijs Jonkers made the call in the big blind but Mangroe four-bet to 12,000. Jonkers called.

The flop came {7-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{3-Clubs}, Jonkers checked and Mangroe continued with a bet of 8,000 which was called.

The turn was the {6-Hearts}, Jonkers checked again and Mangroe now fired a bet of 16,000 into the pot. Jonkers made the call again.

The river completed the board with the {a-Hearts}, Jonkers checked and Mangroe shoved for 23,800. Jonkers dived deep into the tank, trying to figure out what to do. After a while, Jonkers called the clock on himself. The brush came over after a while and called out the 30-second clock without looking at the situation. When the 10-second warning was given, Jonkers flicked in the chip for the call.

Mangroe tabled {a-Spades}{a-Clubs} for the rivered set of aces. Hoefer showed he held {k-Spades}{k-Diamonds} for the flopped lower set of kings and the rai gasped. Jonkers flung his cards over the line but he had to show so he flipped over {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}.

Velasevic Takes it on the River

poolshir • Level 9: 500-1,000, 1,000 ante

Paul Tedeschi raised to 2,500 from under the gun and Danilo Velasevic three-bet to 8,000 from the middle position. Gert Jan Albers made the call from the late position and so did Tonny van Eck on the button. The blinds folded and so did Tedeschi.

The flop came {8-Clubs}{9-Spades}{7-Diamonds}, Velasevic and Albers checked. Van Eck fired a bet of 20,000 into the pot which only Velasevic called.

They both checked through the {3-Clubs} on the turn to the {a-Spades} on the river. Velasevic quickly bet 40,000 for Van Eck to fold to.

Rosner Wins With the Higher Hole Cards

poolshir • Level 9: 500-1,000, 1,000 ante

Abdelhakim Zoufri raised to 2,200 from the middle position and Floyd Rosner three-bet to 6,500 in the hijack. Action folded back to Zoufri who looked at Rosner's stack before making the call.

The flop came {5-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{6-Spades}, Zoufri check-called the 4,500 continuation-bet of Rosner.

They then both checked through the {9-Spades} on the turn and the {4-Diamonds} on the river. Zoufri tabled {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} for king-high. Rosner claimed the pot as he held {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts} for the higher kicker.

Farid Chati
Farid Chati

Paul Dando raised to 2,200 from the middle position and was called by Farid Chati on the button and Kevin Paqué in the big blind.

The flop came {9-Diamonds}{2-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}, Paqué check-folded to the 4,800 continuation-bet of Dando which Chati did call.

The turn brought them the {10-Hearts}, Dando now checked and Chati bet 3,000. Dando responded with a raise to 16,500 which Chati called.

The river completed the board with the {10-Spades}, Dando shoved and Chati took some time before making the call for the 34,900 he had behind. Dando tabled {j-Hearts}{j-Diamonds} for two pair. Chati rapped the table and showed he held {9-Hearts}{8-Spades} for the lower two pair before getting up from his chair.
