Big Slick Good For Nelson

Level 7 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante

A player in middle position limped and was met by a raise to 2,600 from Stephen Nelson in late position. The cutoff player called while the button and blinds folded to send the action back to the middle position player. It did not take long for the middle position player to announce they were all in with Nelson deciding to re-jam his larger stack. The cutoff quickly folded and the middle position player was officially at risk.

Middle Position Player: {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades}
Stephen Nelson: {a-Hearts}{k-Clubs}

Nelson had his opponent dominated and was a significant favourite to score the knockout. Nothing changed on the {4-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{5-Hearts} flop with the {4-Spades} turn leaving the at risk player drawing thin. No queen came on the {6-Diamonds} river, handing Nelson a sizable pot.

Boz Takes One Down

Level 6 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante

Picking up the action on the turn, Austin Boz in early position was involved in a hand with the small blind player. With the board reading {7-Hearts}{3-Clubs}{4-Hearts}{3-Spades} the small blind moved all in and Boz quickly called with the covering stack.

Small Blind Player: {2-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}
Austin Boz: {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

Boz was a huge favourite to scoop the pot and eliminate his opponent with just one card to come. No miracle was forthcoming for the at risk player on the river, ending his tournament while sending a large pile of chips in Boz's direction.

Sonny Finds Fortuitous River

Level 6 : Blinds 300/600, 600 ante

A player opened to 1,400 from middle position and was called by the cutoff as well as L Sonny on the button. The big blind then three-bet to 6,000, receiving calls from all three of his opponents.

Action checked through the {3-Clubs}{9-Hearts}{3-Diamonds} flop to the {5-Spades} turn, at which point the big blind led out for 13,000, eliciting folds from the middle position and cutoff players. Sonny, meanwhile, called off his short stack to put himself at risk.

L Sonny: {4-Hearts}{2-Hearts}
Big Blind Player: {8-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}

In a clash of two titan hands, the big blind player was ahead with his eight. Sonny was, however, open ended and did find a fortunate river in the form of the {a-Clubs} to more than double his stack.

Field Continues to Grow

Level 5 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante

Entering Level 5, the field size for day 1e already surpassed each of the previous four flights with the tournament clock showing 482 registered players. With late registration open until the end of Level 11, that number will continue to grow, adding to the 1,355 entries recorded prior to today.

Thai Doubles Up

Level 5 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante

Picking up the action on a flop of {a-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} Minh Thai in early position was involved in a pot with the big blind and a late position player. The big blind led out for 1,000 and was called by Thai. The late position player responded by raising to 4,500, enough to force the big blind out of the hand but not Thai, who made the call.

Thai checked after the {7-Clubs} turn and was met by a bet of 10,000 from the late position player. After some thought Thai moved all in for around 36,000. The late position player thought long and hard before deciding on a call with the covering stack to put Thai at risk.

Minh Thai: {a-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Late Position Player: {a-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

Thai was in good shape to double up with his superior kicker and did just that after the {9-Clubs} completed the board.

PN Pod Mori Eskandani
PN Pod Mori Eskandani

In the latest PokerNews Podcast episode of 2023, Chad Holloway and Connor Richards handle things while Jesse Fullen is in Australia. They discuss Mike Postle’s sudden reappearance in the poker world after making a final table at the Million Dollar Heater at Beau Rivage in Mississippi, while also talking about the slowroll and needle that accompanied his bust out.

They try to balance that story with a heart-warming one where Johnnie “Johnnie Vibes” Moreno put a bartender into the MSPT Sycuan Main Event, with the recreational player going on to finish in fourth place for $40,000!

Other stories discussed include WSOP.com Player of the Years, Lon McEachern and Daniel Lowery winning WSOP Circuit gold rings, and early winners from the PokerGO Cup.

Speaking of which, PokerGO’s Mori Eskandani joins the show as this week’s guest. The Poker Hall of Famer talks 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) preparations, who came close to challenging Jason Koon on High Stakes Duel III (HSD), plus when we can expect the next HSD match to take place. He also discussed new developments to this year’s PokerGO Tour (PGT) and shared memories from the days when the Mirage was the hot spot for poker in Vegas.
