Day 1h Completed

Weldon Ward Finishes Day 1h of the partypoker $500,000 Guarantee Canadian Grand Prix on Top

Weldon Ward
Weldon Ward

Weldon Ward leads the 16 players from Day 1h into Day 2 of the partypoker $500,000 Guarantee Canadian Grand Prix. He bagged the big stack in a field that started with 156 players. He was at risk earlier in the tournament when he got all in with an open-ended straight draw and turned the nuts against Matthew Durand, who had a pair and made a worse straight. Ward bagged 389,000 and was just ahead of Kevin Daily (354,000). The highlight of Daily's day may have been when he eliminated Poker Hall-of-Famer Mike Sexton. Daily had pocket jacks against the {a-}{k-} of Sexton and held. So far Mike Stannard still holds the biggest stack heading into Day 2 with 668,500. He was an online qualifier. The online flights are still going on, starting 30 minutes after the remaining live flights.

This was the first flight of four today, the last four of eleven live starting flights. Two flights are running right now with one more set to start at 7 p.m.

Rock Tremblay Bubbles Day 1h

Rock Tremblay was all in against Patrick Sullivan and June Jenkins. The two players checked down the {k-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{7-Spades}{4-Clubs} board and Sullivan showed first.

"King," he said.

When neither Jenkins nor Tremblay turned over better, the remaining players began cheering and clapping since they had now made Day 2.

Updated Counts

June Jenkins busted two players when she got pocket eights all in against two players. Her hand held and she stacked over 150,000.

The players are currently on break with 21 remaining. Just five more eliminations until the players bag for Day 2.

Kevin Daily Knocks Out Mike Sexton

"Do I get like a hundred thousand dollars or something," Kevin Daily said as he eliminated Mike Sexton.

Sexton and Daily got all in preflop with pretty even stacks. Sexton was holding {a-}{k-} against the {j-}{j-} of Daily. Sexton failed to catch an ace or a king and Daily, who had him covered, won the hand.

Sexton will likely join one of the remaining flights today, the next one starts at 4 p.m. and there is another one at 7. He could also late register for the 1 p.m. flight.

Daily now has over 200,000 with 23 players remaining. The final 16 players will make Day 2.

Weldon Ward Could Care Less

Weldon Ward bet the {q-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} flop and Matthew Durand went all in and Ward hesitated for a second. Then he shrugged his shoulders.

"Alright let's do it," he said as he pushed his chips in.

Durand had a pair with {j-}{10-} against the {a-}{10-} of Ward. The turn was the {k-Diamonds}, giving Ward a straight and the river didn't change a thing. Ward doubled up.

Someone seemed to question his move and he responded by saying he could always join the next flight.

Sawyers and Tam Out When Over Card Hits

Within a few minutes, both Kathy Sawers and Tam Ho got all in for their tournament lives ahead. They would both be eliminated by an ace.

First, Ho got all in against Dominique Prefontaine with {q-}{q-} against the {a-}{k-}. The board ran out low cards until the river when the {a-Diamonds} hit and it was as though a needle poked Ho at that exact moment. Prefontaine made a quiet fist pump and then went back to his normally stoic demeanor.

Then, Sawers was all in with {k-}{k-} on a queen-flop. Ken Stutz was all in against her and hit an ace on the turn to go ahead of Sawers and stay ahead sending her to the rail.

Poker Hall of Famer Mike Sexton
Poker Hall of Famer Mike Sexton

Poker Hall of Famer Mike Sexton is one of the remaining 77 players in Day 1h. He was sitting a little over 50,000 before he knocked out Basil Armanazi. The two got all in preflop with Armanazi holding {q-}{j-} against the {a-}{k-} of Sexton.

Both players hit a pair on the flop, but Sexton would stay ahead and add about 20,000 to his stack.
