Taylor Hitting All the Right Notes

James Taylor
James Taylor
James Taylor raised to 10,500, and a player in late position moved all in for 18,000. When it came back to Taylor, he made the call with {A-Clubs} {A-Spades}. His opponent sheepishly tabled {2-?} {3-?}. The flop paired him, coming {3-Hearts} {K-Hearts} {8-Spades}, but the {Q-Diamonds} and {K-Spades} that followed did nothing to get him over the hump, and he has been sent off.

James Taylor is running hot, carving his way through this field nicely. He's up to 390,000 now, in the mix of chip leaders.

Pelton Out

Joe Pelton was down to about 30,000 when he went ahead and committed the last of his chips preflop with {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}. He was up against Leeroy Fernandez's {K-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}.

The flop was fine for Pelton -- {3-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{7-Spades}. But the turn and river were not -- {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}. Pelton is out, and Fernandez now has 160,000.

Queens Fail Ma

Tony Ma was all in before the flop with {Q-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds} against Dana Davidson's {A-Clubs}{4-Clubs}. The flop brought an ace -- {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{J-Spades} -- and Ma was looking for a queen to survive. The turn was the {3-Hearts} and the river the {3-Spades}, and Ma is out.

Davidson now has 118,000.

Glines Gone, Taylor Trucking

With the board showing {5-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{J-Spades}{7-Diamonds} and more than 50,000 already in the middle, James Taylor bet 41,000, and Shawn Glines made the call. The river brought the {K-Diamonds}. Taylor pushed all in. Glines considered what to do, then said "I think it's a terrible call, but I call."

Taylor turned over {K-Clubs}{Q-Spades} -- he'd flopped an open-ended straight draw, then hit a king on the end. Glines mucked, having been eliminated.

The table broke soon thereafter, and Taylor carried about 330,000 to his new seat across the room.

Haag Rides the Elevator

Marc Whitford opened with a raise, and Michael Haag moved all in for just about 30,000. Whitford called, turning up {A-Spades} {Q-Spades}. Haag was racing for his tournament life with {10-Clubs} {10-Spades}. The board ran safe for him, coming {3-Spades} {9-Spades} {K-Hearts} {3-Clubs} {4-Hearts}, and he doubled up to 62,000.

On the next hand though, he would take those newly attained chips and give them away to someone else. On a flop of {J-Diamonds} {10-Hearts} {5-Hearts}, Mikael Olsson bet out, and Haag again moved all in. Olsson instantly called for his own tournament life and showed {J-Clubs} {J-Spades} for top set. Haag was trying to run down his straight draw with {K-Spades} {Q-Clubs}. The turn and river blanked off though ({8-Hearts} and {4-Hearts}), and Haag has slipped all the way back down to 7,000.

Mullaghy To the Nines

Sean Mullaghy was just the big beneficiary in a huge hand between him and Melchor Taclan. We came on this one as the chips were being pushed Mullaghy's way. He held {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}, Taclan held {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}, and the board read {K-Spades}{8-Hearts}{9-Clubs}{9-Spades}{K-Hearts}.

Mullaghy's quads gave him the approximately 200,000-chip pot, and knocked Taclan out in 85th place.

Mullaghy is currently sitting across the table from Roland de Wolfe and Bertrand Grospellier. "Nice hand, buddy," said de Wolfe afterwards. "What's your name?"

A Pause for Some Applause

All tourneys were just paused for 10 minutes for the daily bracelet ceremonies. Three bracelets were awarded tonight.

Adding to the festivities, the Stanley Cup is here, as is NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, who happens to be WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack's half-brother. Bettman was given the honor of telling the dealers to go back and "shuffle up and deal."

Ayoub Over Andrey

Martsev Andrey raised to 8,000, Steven Ayoub reraised to 20,000, and Andrey made the call. The flop came {8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{6-Spades}. Martsev pushed all in for 33,000, and Ayoub went into the tank before finally making the call.

Ayoub had guessed right, as Martsev showed {A-Spades}{J-Diamonds} for overcards, while Ayoub held {10-Spades}{7-Spades} for sevens and a gutshot straight draw.

The turn was the {K-Spades} and the river the {8-Spades}, and Ayoub ended up with a flush. Martsev is out, and Ayoub is now up to 275,000.

Good News, Bad News

After a preflop raising war, Luke Vrabel called all in for his remaining stack of 75,500 with {Q-Spades} {Q-Clubs}. The news was good as his opponent tabled {J-Diamonds} {J-Spades}.

Then the news got bad. The flop came {10-Hearts} {J-Clubs} {4-Spades}, putting Vrabel deep in the hole against a set of jacks. Then the news turned around once again; the {Q-Hearts} spiked the turn to re-improve Vrabel to the higher set. The safe {K-Spades} filled out the board, and Vrabel earns a heart-stopping double up.

He's climbed all the way up close to 155,000.
