WSOP Day 4: Joe's Ready for Shootout Final Table, $100K Day 2 Awaits

A busy Friday in the Rio saw several tournaments get underway and many will take notice of the $3,000 Shootout with a pair of Joes making the final table. Main Event champions Joe Cada and Joe McKeehen will both be looking for their third bracelet and $226,218 in cash on Saturday.

The $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better will also play down to a winner on Saturday with several big names remaining, including Mike Leah and Jason Lester. In the $100,000 High Roller, Elio Fox, Darren Elias, and Bryn Kenney have built nice stacks as they return for Day 2.

Event #3: $3,000 No-Limit Hold'em Shootout

The final table is set in this format with two Main Event champions, Joe Cada (2009) and Joe McKeehen (2015), among the final ten players looking for a bracelet. Day 2 saw some big names like Phil Hellmuth and Eli Elezra hit the rail. The event attracted a field of 363 players and a prize pool of $980,100

Those remaining have run the poker gauntlet. In a “shootout,” players must win their tables and then advance to another table and then win that one as well and so forth until there is one winner remaining. The champion will take home $226,218. Event #4: $1,500 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better

Only 36 players remain in this split-pot tournament and Brandon Ageloff leads the field with 555,000 chips followed by Matt Woodward with 505,000 and Chris Bjorin with 488,000. Ageloff is from Coconut Creek, Fla., and has more than $400,000 in lifetime tournament winnings. He’s made a few final tables, but looking for that first major tournament win.

The event attracted 911 entries and a prize pool of $1.2 million. The champion will take home $239,771. Four WSOP bracelet winners are still alive and hoping to add to their collection Mike Wattel (262,000), Mike Leah (99,000), and Jason Lester (95,000). Event #5: $100,000 No-Limit Hold'em High Roller

It’s been a good week for Elio Fox. After winning a bracelet and $393,693 on Day 1 in the $10,000 No-Limit Hold'em Super Turbo Bounty, he now leads the field in this event with 2,881,000 chips. He's followed by Jan-Eric Schwippert with 2,582,000, Darren Elias with 2,038,000, Michael Kamran with 2,018,000, and Bryn Kenney with 1,971,000.

Elias is looking for that first WSOP bracelet after winning his history-making fourth World Poker Tour title two weeks ago in the Aria’s Bobby Baldwin Classic. Other big names returning for Day 2 include Brian Rast, Jason Koon, Justin Bonomo, Ryan Riess, Fedor Holz, and Jonathan Little.

Event #6: GIANT - $365 No-Limit Hold'em

One Friday Day 1 down, four more to go. The Giant offers a chance at a bracelet for a bargain buy-in. The event features five consecutive Friday night Day 1 starting flights with four more set for June 8, 15, 22, and 29, with unlimited re-entries.

After the first Friday, Justin Sternberg leads the field with 1.215 million followed by Danny Nguyen with 1.1 million chips and Elvis Toomas with 1 million. Accomplished grinder Josh Reichard follows with with 935,000. Only 80 players remain after 1,289 entries in the first starting flight. In this event, players start with 25,000 chips and 20-minute levels on Day 1 and 40-minute on Days 2 and 3, which will be played on June 30 and July 1.

Event #7: COLOSSUS - $565 No-Limit Hold'em

Get ready for the colossal field fun. For $565 players get a chance at a massive payout and once again the field should be enormous. The event guarantees a cool $1 million to the winner with payouts starting on Day 1. Saturday’s first day of action features three starting flights at 10 a.m. and three more at 5 p.m. Those Day 1 starting flights continue on Sunday and Monday. Day 2 begins on Tuesday.

Players are allowed one re-entry per flight, and the event begins with 30-minute levels on Day 1 and 5,000 starting chips. Levels expand to 60 minutes on Days 2 and 3. Players will play 18 levels on Day 1.

Thomas Pomponio, of Manahawkin, N.J., topped a huge field of 18,054 entries in 2017 to claim his million bucks. That prize pool swelled to more than $9 million. Will it climb even higher this year? Event #8: $2,500 Mixed Triple Draw Lowball

Lowball fans will be out in force for this one. This tournament features limit forms of A-5, 2-7, and Badugi – in triple draw form as the name implies. Players will start with 12,500 chips and levels last 60 minutes in this three-day event. Each player is also allowed one re-entry to help build that prize pool.

Last year’s champion was Jesse Martin, of Northborough, Mass., who took home $130,948 in an event that featured a $506,250 prize pool. Martin notched his second bracelet and is no stranger to lowball success. He won his first bracelet in 2013 in the $10,000 No Limit 2-7 Lowball. The action kicks off at 3 p.m., and PokerNews will be tracking all those low hands.
