Day 3 Completed

Day 3 Bites the Dust; 24 Players Remain

All roads lead to Romanello
All roads lead to Romanello
After a slow start to the day - we were well into the third level of play by the time the bubble burst - a surge of sudden craziness means that we have reached our goal of 24 players well before our usual bedtime.

Those who made it as far as the money but not as far as Day 4 included Team PokerStars Pro ElkY, last night's chip leader Csaba Toth and Amsterdam Master Classics winner Kristoffer "Sumpas" Thorsson.

A quick scan of the remaining tables before press were ejected indicated that usually cheerful Welshman Roberto Romanello, today rather muted by a bout of food poisoning, had regained the lead by the end of the night. A number of very dangerous forces spent the latter part of today accumulating chips, though - among their number are Andrew Teng, Team PokerStars Pro Peter Eastgate, young American Ricky Fohrenbach and EPT Vilamoura final tablist Andrei Vlasenko.

A redraw will magically take place overnight, and players will be sitting themselves down at the last three tables at 2pm CET tomorrow to play right down to an eight-handed final table. Be sure to join us back here then for all the action, direct from the floor.

A Sick Finish to the Night

Morten Guldhammer opened in early position, raising to 30,000. A couple seats down, Paul Szyszko made the smooth call, and the bet passed further around the table. When it came to Jens Sundberg, he moved all in for 230,000 total. Guldhammer quickly folded, but Szyszko mulled it over for just a quick minute before making the call.

Showdown
Szyszko: {8-Clubs} {8-Hearts}
Sundberg: {10-Spades} {10-Hearts}

The news was good for the at-risk Sundberg, but it wouldn't stay that way for long. The dealer burned a card and laid three more face-down on the felt. When he flipped them over to spread the flop, the {8-Spades} was staring right up at the world. Just to really needle it, the dealer paused on the eight for about two seconds before unrolling the {K-Clubs} {2-Clubs} {8-Spades} flop, as the whole room reacted to the news that the day was possibly moments from ending.

Fourth street struck even harder. The {8-Diamonds} was the last eight-ball in the deck, and it made Szyszko the unbeatable quads and signaled Sundberg's elimination. Just so he'll have nightmares about it for a few months, the dealer was ruthless enough to put the {10-Clubs} on the river, Sundberg's useless full house marking the end of his day in 25th place, and the end of Day 3 altogether.

Chip Leaders Tangling

Romanello and Teng mixing it up
Romanello and Teng mixing it up
With the betting folded around to the blinds, Roberto Romanello raised from the small. In the big, Andrew Teng reraised, and Romanello eventually made the call. It was shaping up to be a battle for the chip lead.

The flop brought out {K-Spades} {4-Clubs} {3-Hearts}, and Romanello checked to the raiser. Teng stuck out a bet of what looked like 100,000 straight, and Romanello obliged him with the call.

Fourth street was the {K-Clubs}, and the action check-checked. The board filled out with the {3-Spades}, and Romanello took the betting lead, firing out 145,000 at the pot. That sent Teng spiraling deep into the tank for several minutes. Eventually, he laid his hand down, and Romanello couldn't resist flashing his airball {5-?} {7-?} as he raked in his loot. It's too close to call right now, but it appears that he's regained the chip lead with that pot as well.

Vogt Vanquished

Rasmus Vogt was all in before the flop with {7-Clubs} {7-Hearts}, and he was looked up by Peter Eastgate and his {A-Clubs} {10-Clubs}.

The flop was a good sweat as it came out {J-Diamonds} {5-Clubs} {K-Clubs}, leaving Vogt to fade about half the deck for his survival. Fortunately (or unfortunately), he didn't have to sweat for too long. The {2-Clubs} peeled off on the turn, improving Eastgate to the winning club flush. A meaningless {9-Diamonds} is the last river card of Vogt's day, eliminated just a few spots shy of a Day 4 appearance.

Bowey Bows Out

Morten Klein raised to 26,000 under the gun and everyone folded around to James Bowey in the big blind, who announced all in for 230,000. He probably wasn't really expecting a call, but that's exactly what he got.

Bowey: {K-Diamonds} {Q-Clubs}
Klein: {Q-Hearts} {Q-Diamonds}

Board: {A-Clubs} {7-Clubs} {A-Spades} {3-Spades} {6-Diamonds}

Another one bites the dust, while Klein moves on up to 600,000.

Eastgate Spring Klaning

It looked like Peter Eastgate had raised and Jens Klaning had shoved from the big blind; either way, they were on their backs preflop.

Eastgate: {6-Clubs} {6-Diamonds}
Klaning: {A-Clubs} {7-Clubs}

Board: {4-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} {K-Diamonds} {K-Hearts} {3-Spades}

Klaning is, obviously, busto. Eastgate though is up to nearly 600,000.

Froslev Thoroughly Fouqued Off

Damien Fouquet raised, but Thomas Froslev in the big blind reraised. Fouquet shoved, Froslev called, and they were on their backs.

Fouquet: {A-?} {J-?}
Froslev: {K-?} {K-?}

Board: {6-?} {K-?} {Q-?} {2-?} {10-?}

The king on the flop made Froslev a set, but the ten on the river made Fouquet a straight. While Fouquet doubled up to around 700,000, Froslev and his remaining shrapnel - just three big blinds' worth or so - were left to fume.

An Oracle on the Rail

Morten Guldhammer opened with an under-the-gun raise to 25,000, and the table folded all the way around to the blinds. In the big, Kristijonas Andrulis peeked down at {10-Spades} {10-Clubs} and moved all in for about 160,000 total. Andrulis instantly called the healthy reraise, turning up {Q-Clubs} {J-Clubs}.

Andrulis began to stand up, but a friend behind him said, "Sit down. Sit down. You will win this."

"How can you know?" asked Andrulis, half-amused, half-frustrated.

And the flop was no fun at all for the at-risk player. The {Q-Spades} appeared right in the window on a flop of {9-Diamonds} {5-Diamonds} {Q-Spades}. Andrulis slid his chair under the table and began to turn away just as a timely {10-Diamonds} appeared on the turn! The fortune-teller on the rail was right as the two-outer brought life back to Andrulis, needing to fade just a few outs now to double.

When the river blanked off with the {A-Hearts}, he did just that, working his stack back to about 340,000.

Guldhammering the Opposition

Morten Guldhammer opened for 25,000 and got two callers to see the {6-Hearts} {7-Hearts} {7-Spades} flop. He immediately bet out 100,000 and without delay his opponents both folded. For some reason he showed them the {6-Clubs} to prove that he'd had at least two pair.
