It was one of the largest fields at this year's World Series of Poker, and with Event #50: $1,500 Millionaire Maker down to its final two tables, every single decision carried massive implications.
The stakes couldn't have been higher, with the tournament scheduled to mint two separate millionaires by the time a winner emerges on Wednesday. Unfortunately for Seiji Sasaki, the Japanese player will not be among those taking home a seven-figure payday. Sasaki bowed out in 15th place after a dramatic clash with Michael Monroig.
Believing he had secured a vital double-up, Sasaki initially celebrated and high-fived his rail, only to realize the reality when he returned to the table...
A second 15-minute break of the day is getting underway. Action will resume at 4:45 p.m. local time.
No-Limit Hold'em
Jim Collopy raised to 23,000 on the button, and called when Maxi Lehmanski moved all in for 99,000 from the big blind.
Maxi Lehmanski: K♠J♣
Jim Collopy: K♣9♣
The A♥3♣5♣ flop provided Collopy new ways to win after flopping a flush draw, but it was his kicker that came to the rescue, as the 8♥ turn and 9♠ river completed the board, sending Lehmanski to the rail.
Pot-Limit Omaha
Action was picked up on a flop of 5♥6♦8♣. Under-the-gun player Maurice Hawkins announced "pot" for a bet totalling 193,000. John Riordan was in the hijack, and he thought for a bit, then shoved for 270,000. Hawkins snapped off the bet.
John Riordan: A♥A♣Q♣9♣
Maurice Hawkins: 10♠9♥8♠6♥
The turn K♦ kept Hawkins' two pair in the lead, but the K♠ river gave his opponent aces-up, as Hawkins' two pair was counterfeit. He described the runner-runner suckout as "some bullsh*t".
No-Limit Hold'em
Aaron Mermelstein moved all in for 136,000 in the cutoff and in the big blind, Dylan Smith called.
Aaron Mermelstein: A♣10♥
Dylan Smith: J♥J♣
The board ran out 5♥2♥2♣3♣K♣ and the jacks held up to see Mermelstein fall to Smith.
At another table, Martin Kabrhel was eliminated by Nick Schulman.
Pot-Limit Omaha
Scott Seiver opened with a pot-sized raise to 35,000 from early position. Nick Pupillo, on his left, stuck in the call, and Sam Soverel called from the big blind.
Soverel then led out for 30,000 on the 6♣7♣2♥ flop, with both of his opponents calling.
On the 2♠ turn, he slowed down with a check, and Seiver did the same. Pupillo asked the size of the pot, which was 210,000, before betting out for 75,000. Soverel folded, and Seiver went into the tank. After burning through two time extensions, he put in the call.
The river brought in the 9♣, and Seiver checked again. It was now Pupillo's turn to use two time extensions, as he thought for a while before checking back. Seiver had red aces, and Pupillo had the black ones, as they tabled A♥A♦8♣7♥ and A♠A♣7♦6♥, respectively, to chop the pot.
No-Limit Hold'em
Joao Vieira raised to 22,000 on the button, and Anh Do called in the big blind.
The 8♣7♠3♥ flop saw the action check through, promoting Do to lead out for 38,000 on the K♦ turn, which Vieira called.
Do continued betting on the A♠ river, putting 46,000 into the middle, and, once again, Vieira called.
Do tabled K♠9♦, but had been run down by the A♥Q♦ of Vieira.
No-Limit Hold'em
Tom Vogelsang raised to 20,000 from late position, and in the big blind, Sean Perry called.
The flop rolled out 8♥6♥5♠, and Perry check-called a bet of 30,000 from Vogelsang.
On the turn 4♣, Perry checked once more over to Vogelsang, who moved all in for 65,000, and Perry pulled out his phone.
"Alright boys, we're all in," he said to the camera as he pushed his chips into the middle.
Sean Perry: 7♣4♦
Tom Vogelsang: A♥3♥
Perry had flopped a straight, but Vogelsang hit his flush on the river K♥, and Perry was eliminated from the tournament.
