Event 9: $10,500 Aussie Millions Main Event

Day 1a Completed

Day 1a is in the Books

The bling.
The bling.
The event that all of Melbourne, Australia, and the world has been waiting for finally got underway Sunday morning when 233 players took to the felt all in hopes of winning the 2010 Aussie Millions Main Event Championship.

The main attraction was a table draw that consisted of Tom "durrrr" Dwan, Phil Ivey, Billy "The Croc" Argyros, and Leo Boxell. It was Dwan who got the best of the group throughout the early part of the day, with Ivey busting just after dinner break. However, Dwan could not maintain his momentum and slid slowly down the counts as the night progressed.

One of the chipleaders is another young online superstar, Sorel Mizzi. Mizzi got himself rolling when he got it all in with two pair versus a set and was able to river himself a higher full house. He ends the day with about 112,300 and is followed closely by Zach Gruneburg, Karl Marenholz, Andrew Feldman and David Steicke.

Tomorrow, a new set of Aussie Millions Main Event hopefuls will fill the seats in the Crown Poker Room and PokerNews will be there to bring you all the action at 12:30 p.m. GMT +11.

Four More Hands

Tournament director Christian Vaughan has instructed the dealers to deal four more hands, after which the remaining players will bag 'em and tag 'em.

Aristidou - Reader of Souls

Peter Aristidou raised to 2,500 preflop and the action folded around to the player in the hijack position who called to go heads-up to a flop of {2-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{5-Clubs}.

Aristidou opened for 3,500 and the opponent smooth-called, before firing out 5,500 after Aristidou checked the turn of the {9-Clubs}.

Aristidou turned to his opponent and stated, "You have pocket jacks with the {J-Clubs}," before mucking his hand.

His opponent flashed that very card and took down the pot. Aristidou is down to 32,000.

"The Double Check-Raise All In"

Preflop, Gus Hansen made a bet of 2,900 and was called from the big blind.

The flop came down {k-Spades}{10-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} and the two checked.

The turn brought the {2-Spades}. Hansen's opponent check-raised all in when he fired off a bet of 2,600.

Hansen went into the tank for a few minutes, racking his brain saying, "I got the head shake all in, that's so strong." Hansen finally made the call.

Hansen: {j-Clubs}{10-Hearts}
Opponent: {q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}

The river bricked for Hansen and his opponent doubled up.

Aristidou: all smiles

On a board that read {a-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{7-Diamonds}, Peter Aristidou bet 5,500 on the turn into an opponent in the big blind position.

The big blind called, then called Aristidou's all in bet of 9,100 on the river of the {2-Clubs}, only to muck when Aristidou showed {a-Spades}{j-Hearts} for two pair.

Aristidou is up to 41,000 after that hand.

Double Up for Cusenza

We caught up on the action on the turn when Adam Cusenza moved all in against his opponent on a {2-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{8-Spades} board.

Cusenza got called and he flipped over {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}, while his opponent turned over {7-Spades}{8-Diamonds}.

The river brought the {10-Hearts} and Cusenza was back in the running with a double up.

Marenhol(d)z Aces over Kings

Julian Cohen started things off by raising UTG to 2,100. An unknown in late position reraised to 6,000 and Karl Marenholdz moved all in for 45,600. Cohen quickly ducked out of the way and the unknown called.

Marenholz was in great shape with pocket aces, and his opponent in a world of hurt with kings. The board rolled out {6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{9-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}{10-Spades} and Marenholz is now up to about 94,200.

Feldman on Fire

Andrew Feldman raised to 2,100 from under the gun before the opponent moved all in for 2,700 from UTG+1. Gus Hansen called from the hijack position and the others got out of the way before Feldman called.

Feldman and Hansen checked down the flop and turn of {3-Spades}{4-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}, but when the {a-Clubs} appeared on the river Feldman fired out 3,000.

Hansen quickly mucked and Feldman tabled {a-Spades}{k-Hearts} for runner-runner trips, eliminating the opponent and sending Feldman's stack up to 83,000.

Hansen is down to 58,000 in chips.

Dwan Under Pressure

Dwan: doing it tough
Dwan: doing it tough
Luke Thomas raised before the flop to 2,400, only to see Tom 'durrrr' Dwan reraise to 7,700. Thomas called and they saw a flop of {6-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}.

Thomas led out for 5,500 and Dwan called, then both players checked the turn of the {5-Spades}.

Thomas then fired out 15,000 on the river of the {7-Diamonds}; Dwan called but mucked after Thomas tabled {k-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} for the flush. Dwan looked frazzled and it appears that he can't seem to work Thomas out, much to the delight of Thomas' supporters on the rail.

Thomas is up to 72,200 while Dwan slips to 35,300.
