Daniel Negreanu Background
Negreanu's parents emigrated from Romania seven years before he was born. Negreanu was born in Toronto in 1974 and got his start in gambling as a young teenager hanging out in pool halls, hustling, betting on sports, and also playing cards.
With the encouragement of his parents to always chase his dreams, Daniel decided school just wasn’t in the cards for him. He left high school just one credit short of graduation to focus on poker.

Daniel Negreanu Poker History
Negreanu's first recorded poker cash came in 1997 and he won his first World Series of Poker title the following year, winning the $2,000 Pot Limit Hold'em event for $169,460. At the age of 23, Negreanu became the youngest WSOP champion ever — a title he held until 2004.
During his early career, this youth earned him the name Kid Poker, a nickname that has stuck with him until the present day. Negreanu played mostly on the East Coast, but travelled elsewhere to play during the late 90s. This included winning the $7,500 Texas Hold'em Championship Event at the United States Poker Championship in Atlantic City for $210,000.
Negreanu would have to wait until 2003 to add a second WSOP bracelet, winning the $2,000 S.H.O.E. for $100,440, but even greater success awaited him the following year.
In addition to a third bracelet, Negreanu made three more final tables to be named WSOP Player of the Year. He also won two World Poker Tour titles that year. First, winning the Borgata Poker Open $10,000 No Limit Hold'em in September for more than $1.1 million and just three months later, he took down the Five-Diamond World Poker Classic $15,000 Championship event in Las Vegas for over $1.7 million.
The Poker Hand I'll Never Forget: Daniel Negreanu
In 2006, Negreanu added a WSOP Circuit ring in the Tunica $10,000 Championship Event, as well as finishing third in the WPT Doyle Brunson North American Poker Classic for $592,000.
Negreanu was now a poker superstar and became a PokerStars Ambassador in 2007. He also made regular appearances on televised poker shows such as Poker After Dark, the National Heads-Up Championship and the Intercontinental Poker Championship.
In 2008, Negreanu added a fourth WSOP bracelet to his collection in $2,000 Limit Hold'em, and final-tabled the second-ever WSOP Europe Main Event in London, where he finished fifth.
Throughout the early 2010s, Negreanu started to travel to more international poker festivals — trips to Brazil for the Latin America Poker Tour and Monte-Carlo for the European Poker Tour. A trip to Australia in 2013 would see him earn his fifth WSOP bracelet, by winning the 2013 WSOP Asia-Pacific Main Event for over A$1 million. He followed that up later the same year with victory in the WSOP Europe €25,600 High Roller for a sixth bracelet. Both of these victories contributed to him being named WSOP Player of the Year for a second time.
In 2014, Negreanu missed out on the biggest victory of his poker career after finishing runner-up in the $1,000,000 The Big One for One Drop. He still took home $8,288,001 in prize money, by far the largest cash of his career.
The following year, even more heartbreak as Negreanu narrowly missed out on making the WSOP Main Event final table, finishing 11th.
In the years that followed, Negreanu began to expand his horizons. Adding in events such as the Poker Masters and the U.S. Poker Open to his poker schedule, and rarely ventured outside of the United States to play.
He left PokerStars in 2019, before joining GGPoker later that year.
That same year, Negreanu married Amanda Leatherman and almost won a third WSOP Player of the Year title.
A simmering feud between Negreanu and Doug Polk came to a head in 2020 in the shape of a heads-up grudge match. Polk eventually came out on top after 25,000 hands, with Polk winning $1.2 million in the process.
By now, Negreanu had gone almost a decade without winning a WSOP bracelet. Since capturing victory in the WSOP APAC Main Event, he had also been made to suffer no fewer than 12 top three finishes, without a title.
In 2021, Negreanu narrowly missed out on a seventh WSOP bracelet, with two third-place finishes and seven top-10 finishes in total, and suffered more disappointment the following year, as he was unable to make a final table in a live WSOP for the first time since 2011, slumping to a $1.1 million loss overall.
However, 2024 began with a bang. After pledging that "change was coming" after losing $2 million in 2023, he opened the year with PokerGo Tour victories in January and March to get back to winning ways.
And finally, in the 2024 Poker Players Championship, he tasted bracelet success yet again to clinch his seventh WSOP bracelet.
Since this victory, Negreanu has continued to play regularly on the poker circuit, securing several victories on the PokerGo Tour, including the 2024 PLO Series and the 2025 Mixed Games Series.
At the most recent WSOP in Las Vegas, Negreanu was denied an eighth bracelet in Event #9: $10,000 Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship, finishing runner-up to Ryan Bambrick.
